Great thread, OP. I also marvel at these upgrade lists. A handful of times over the past two decades I’ve made it to silver status (or similarly named lowest-level elite status) on a few airlines. Upgrades on that basis have almost never happened, but the airlines love to give you the impression they might. Yes, they might, but the odds on that are rather poor.

Look, upgrades happen, but just not on marquee routes. They don't happen now and they rarely happened 10 years ago. Yes, even 10 years ago, on transcons involving US Airways from PHL to LAX, your chances of upgrading to F as a Silver elite were not high. On a 13 hour flight, who isn't going to want to upgrade?
My last GF was an AAdvantage gold last year. She flew almost exclusively east coast routes - DCA-MSY, DCA-JAX, DCA-PVD, DCA-CHS, PHL-ORF. She upgraded about 35% of the time - mainly because the ratio of F to Y was low and mainly because they routes aren't sexy high elite status routes with a sleeper seat.

I used to fly this route frequently, and I was well over 50% successful in my u/g as an EXP. But you are right, the list for this flight is incredibly long most of the time - good thing its basically 35 minutes in the air.

If they were ever to launch a AUS-SEA non-stop, I'd imagine the same with Amazon, MS, Expedia and other high-tech industry travel b/w the city pairs..

I got an upgrade LAX-DFW on Labor Day, 2018. My first since moving to the DFW area in Nov 2017 (I am Lifetime PLAT).
It is so difficult here. Fortunately, I also got the AS upgrade the previous Friday from DAL-LAX
