We’ve merged your announcement of AA’s first A321neo at Hamburg into the existing AA A321neo thread. Thanks for letting us know where the inaugural 32Q is.

Anytime!

AA has announced the 196 seat A321neo (new engine option) will arrive in January 2019 and begin service April, 2019.

These aircraftvwill be delivered with 20F, 176Y - including 47 MCE seats defined below (F20, Y/MCE47, Y129).

American outlines A321neo network in 2Q19
By Jim Liu, Routes Online link
Posted 23 December 2018 13:50

American Airlines during the weekend of 23DEC18’s schedule update filed planned Airbus A321neo routes, under aircraft code 32Q. Planned A321neo service is scheduled for the second quarter of 2019, with configuration of F20 Y176.

LAX – MCO 02APR19 – 02MAY19 1 daily (AA2361/219)

PHX – ANC 06JUN19 – 19AUG19 1 daily (AA1413/1372)

PHX – LAX 02APR19 – 02MAY19 1 daily (AA820/1895)

PHX – MCO 02APR19 – 02MAY19 1 daily (AA682/1022; Except 21APR19)

(Hawaii requires AA possess, test and secure FAA approval for 32Q ETOPS rating, possibly a reason for these inaugural overland routes?)

Eventually the A321neo is to replace all Hawaii service A321H and 757 aircraft, and deploy on non-JFK-LAX or JFK-SFO routes.

AA Airbus A321neo, c/o ch aviation

JonNYC: MCE is row 8-11, 17 (overwing exit), 27 (exit row, 5 seats in row,) 18-21 (D,E,F)
There is an existing order of 100 A321neo, with the first delivery in February 2019. However, American Airlines has reached an agreement with Airbus Industries to defer twenty-two A321neo that were previously scheduled for delivery in 2019, 2020, and 2021 to at least 2024, citing high fuel prices and a weak revenue environment for the move.

AA will install Viasat Ka-band inflight connectivity on the entire A321neo fleet.

According to David Seymour, American’s Senior Vice President of Integrated Operations, when they take the A321neo starting in January “that will actually serve as the platform to get certification for our refurbishment and standardization of the 321s... so we can go common configuration.” That effort will start in February.
Currently, though both will be refitted to 190 seats under Project Oasis:

LAA “32B”: F16 (38” pitch), Y165 including 38 MCE (181 total seat count)

LUS A321: F16 (36” pitch), Y171 including 18 MCE (187 total seat count)

(Note: Delta A321 has 192 seats.)

The seats have been described in the previous retrofit / CIP thread as

F will match the LUS 321 36” pitch, MCE and Y likely will be reduced to 737 MAX standards.

Airbus 32Q / A321neo densified w/ 196 seats as of 2019

US Airways ordered 100 Airbus A321neo (A321-200 with New Engine Option, using the CFM International LEAP-1A engine and Sharklets wingtip devices) for delivery beginning 2019. The aircraft performed its maiden flight February of 2016. (Current coding would have this as "32B" because of the Sharklets, but IATA may use new Equipment Codes for the MAX and neo aircraft.)

Link to IATA aircraft equipment codes c/o flugzeuginfo.net

"For the A321neo – which performed its maiden flight in February 2016 – Airbus is increasing seating capacity with optimised use of cabin space, increased exit limits and a new cabin door configuration. This “Cabin-Flex” option will increase the jetliner’s maximum certified capacity to 240 seats (single class), while still accommodating Airbus’ modern comfort standard of at least 18-inch wide seats." (Airbus)

Seating will be F20 Y176 (less than the 206 two class maximum) due to F, MCE and MC. Improvements include quieter operation, greater payload, range extension and a 20% reduction in fuel use per seat. The aircraft is designed to replace the Boeing 757-200.

The Airbus A321neo prototype, D-AVXB, first flew on 9 February 2016 (with Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM geared turbofan engines). Maximum range is expected to be 6,500 km (3,500 nm) for the A321neo without LR capabilities.

This is prob a dumb question but does that mean all the LUS A321s will get 20F too?

You know Dougie isn't going to let revenue streams go untapped. Meanwhile, here I was hoping they'd just send them to the boneyard.

AA's A321NEO most likely will have 2 overwing exits instead of door 2 - this allows them to put 196 seats.

And allows them to call the first exit row seats MCE, even though they won't recline.

Because MCE is defined by what is in front of a seat, not behind it.

Correct, row 17 is overwing exit and is MCE.

Goodbye row 10/11 it was nice knowing you. Loved having nothing in front and me and being able to get up without bothering others or being bothered. Sometimes I think 10/11A is better than F.

Any word on IFE?

Will they be ripping out IFE (like on the 737 retrofits)?

These are new a/c and since they won't be doing any real long haul (other than HI maybe Northern South America, a few Western European cities) I wouldn't count on it. Sitting in a 29 inch seat for eight hours. Sounds lovely.

I agree, I was just making a point that I would rather have a regular seat that reclines, that I didn't pay extra for, than an extra legroom seat that doesn't recline, that I had to pay extra for.

AA appears to be only focusing on one or two fleet at a time. Right now the focus is mainly on the 757s. JonNYC (very reliable source) shared that he got word that AA is finally going to kick off a project standardizing the A321s (both LAA and LUS) some time later this year.
Today, Gary Leff has JonNYC’s tweet and expands:

This is 9 – 15 additional seats compared to American’s existing Airbus A321s. Today the Airbus A321 (other than the premium version flying cross country) has:

Legacy US Airways: 187 seats including 16 first class with 36 inch pitch, 18 main cabin extra, and 153 standard coach

Legacy American: 181 seats including 16 first class with 38 inch pitch, 38 main cabin extra, and 127 standard coach
According to David Seymour, American’s Senior Vice President of Integrated Operations, when they take the A321neo starting in January “that will actually serve as the platform to get certification for our refurbishment and standardization of the 321s..so we can go common configuration.” That effort will start in February.
As Gary states, 196 is both denser and more pax than the reviled 757-200 (188) in current Hawaii service, and the 757-200 is a larger airframe longitudinally. He also reminds us this is four seats short of having to crew in an additional flight attendant. However, it’s only four seats more than a Delta A321.

The A321neo will be focused on West Coast flying. They’ll start with Phoenix – Hawaii and Los Angeles – Hawaii as well as Los Angeles-based cross country flights to destinations other than New York JFK. The airline tries to base a single aircraft type in a specific area, for instance the 737 MAX began in Miami. Other Airbus A321s, as they’re converted, will get assigned elsewhere.
Lucky at OMAAT previously reported

I reached out to American, and was informed that legacy US Airways A321 aircraft are getting a trim and finish update, which includes new seat covers and carpeting. That is what we have seen so far.

In regards to adding power, etc, they said “we are looking toward long-term retrofit opportunities for this fleet and expect to see power ports as part of the long-term strategy.”
