[COLOR="Navy"]Welcome to the 2019 Domestic Dining thread and the resulting discussion/trip reports/photos/shared experiences. Here, in this wiki post, I'll strive to explain what you should expect on AA flights in First and Business, meals-wise. Keep in mind that there are many domestic flights, so there are quite a few parameters to keep track of.

Basically, in its best condensed form, you should expect to receive a meal between 4:59am - 8pm on flights longer than 900 miles, which equals about two hours in the air. From that point, there are exceptions, and specific timing parameters.

What to Expect - Mainline:
Keep in mind that this list is not entirely inclusive, and there may be certain exceptions and/or abnormalities.
  • Up to 699 miles: Light snacks such as a fig bar, cookies, and/or pretzels
  • 700-899 miles: Warmed nuts, a snack plate (fruit/cheese, pita/hummus, or spinach dip/pita), and a cookie
  • 900-1298 miles: A meal (fruit/breakfast entree; salad/entree) followed by a cookie; no meals between 1:30-4pm
  • 1298-2199 miles: A full meal including an appetizer, with cake for lunch desserts and premade ice-cream for dinner desserts
  • 2200 miles and above: Same as 1298-2199 miles, but consists of made-to-order sundaes or a cheese plate for both lunch and dinner desserts

What to Expect - Regional:
Keep in mind that this list is not entirely inclusive, and there may be certain exceptions and/or abnormalities.
  • Up to 175 miles: A light snack mix along with beverage service
  • 176-899 miles: Sweet and savory, organic/healthy snack choices (snack basket)
  • 900-2199 miles: Warm mixed nuts, two meal options, and dessert. (For flights over 2200 miles, you will receive the same selection of snacks from 176-899 miles as a pre-arrival snack. All regional meal flights leaving after 8:00pm will also receive sweet and savory snacks as the only option. Editor's note: A regional jet for 2000+ miles? Hope that never happens!)
American Eagle flights do not offer pre-ordering of meals.

All of the meal flights that fall under the above timing parameters will receive two choices; normally, one meat and one vegetarian.

Longer westbound flights leaving from the east coast (transcontinental; non-premium) are not officially exceptions, but some flights after 8pm receive a full dinner service (such as the 8:05pm MIA-SAN flight, or the 8:30pm PHL-LAS flight). Additionally, non-premium transcontinental red-eye flights will receive snack basket service upon departure, then a continental breakfast box prior to arrival.

Official Exceptions:
The following flights all fall under 900 miles, but will receive a full meal service, with the exception of flights leaving between 1:31-4pm. Despite some of the listed flights being over 900 miles, they are remaining listed here, based on the AA website for documentation purposes.
  • Chicago (ORD) - AUS/BDL/BOS/DCA/EWR/JFK/LGA/MSY/RDU
  • Dallas (DFW) - BJX/ORD/MEX/QRO/SLP
  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL) - PAP
  • Los Angeles (LAX) - DEN
  • Miami (MIA) - DCA/IAD/PAP
  • New York (LGA) - ATL
  • Phoenix (PHX) - MZT

Additional Information:
  • JFK-LAX/SFO; MIA-LAX are considered premium transcontinental flights, and as such, receives a more refined service with three meal choices, per-course service, printed menus, and tray/tablecloth linens in both F/J. Those flights now are the only domestic flights in the system to offer special meals as another option (which can be reserved by either preordering online, or calling). Red-eye flights will receive a full "supper/snack" meal service, which is basically a condensed dinner service.

  • Hawaiian meal service is very similar to what you'd expect on 2200+ mile flights, but there also will be Hawaiian rolls served, along with a pre-arrival continental breakfast/snack (dependent on the length of the route). Tropical warmed nuts are also currently served.

  • All flights over 700 miles, regardless of a meal being served or not, will receive warm mixed nuts and a cookie.

  • At this time, pre-ordered meals are not available on American Eagle flights.

Choice of Southwest Enchillada or Fruit and Yogurt. The enchillada is excellent, it's spicy and it has cheese in it and it makes for a tasty meal. Biscuits, croissants and cinnamon rolls were also offered.
What is that drink you're having? Looks like a mixture of juices? Agreed on this breakfast dish......very good!

That is a Madras: Orange Juice, Cranberry and Vodka. It's my preferred morning cocktail.

This may just be me, but I really miss the "adult chocolate milk" for morning flights... Only if Kahlua didn't stop producing minis.....

Late March 2019
SFO - JFK departing 6:18 a.m. - arrived on time
Airbus A321 (32B) - Layout 3
Flagship J

Full flight.
PDB water, OJ or Prosecco.
Nice crew. More smiles than usual for AA. On the lookout for refills for most of the flight.
Couple of pre-packaged cookies with first beverage delivery after leveling off.
Small fruit plate as an appetizer (no pic, sorry).
Warm cookie before arrival (chocolate chip or snickerdoodle)
Menu and my meal pic below.

Mixed bag. Hard, unripe melon. One of those unfortunate bagels that you could wad up into a ball with a 3/4 inch diameter without even trying. The salmon was OK except the paucity of the serving. Nicely cooked egg. Capers were good with this (I understand that they aren't always included.)

@CMK10, were any of the 737's you were traveling on Oasis'd?

Edited to add, general request: For anyone flying in the 737's, can you please indicate whether or not the aircraft was Oasis'd, moving forward? Many thanks!

No and in fact they both had AVOD. Probably the last time I'll be able to say that

My ORD-LGA (and return LGA-ORD) shuttle 737's did not have seat-back AVOD. They were the old 737's where no seatback IFE were ever installed, but there were a few overhead screens with random shows playing. Much harder to keep kids entertained with handheld devices.

First Class
Dinner
767-300

First of all, this was a fantastic DFW based legacy American Crew. ^

PDB of choice - a wonderful break from the lAAzy PDB consisting of a passed tray of water or juice on the 767-300.

Once in the air, hot towels were distributed and collected.

Beverage of choice served from the cart along with warm mixed nuts.

Pre-order acknowledged.

The entrée choice was short rib or the Southwest pasta. I went with the Southwest pasta and was not disappointed. The entrée was served on a tray, along with the appetizer which consisted of a nice-sized piece of fresh burrata cheese and some sliced red and yellow peppers and the salad. The salad was a not so good-looking piece of iceberg lettuce (I didn’t try it).Choice of breads (including pretzel!) offered from the basket.

I must note that the Southwest pasta (which, as one or two other posts in this forum reflect) is basically a piece of lasagna in a delicious spicy red sauce (the flavor was really very, very good for airplane pasta). Likewise, the burrata cheese and sliced red and yellow peppers appetizer was also very excellent.I would highly recommend both (not that we get to pre-order appetizers). ^

After the trays were cleared, mint chocolate chip ice cream was offered (and was also delicious).

Drinks were pro-actively refilled throughout the entire flight. ^

Prior to landing, mints were offered.

Overall, a great flight - superior, friendly service from all of the F/A’s and the food was very tasty (a night and day experience all around from my January 2019 report on this same route and equipment type).

What kind of “light snacks” is AA serving these days in flights after 8pm?
I have AUS DFW PHL, but my layover in DFW isn’t long enough to grab a meal.
I’m worried I’ll be hungry.
Thanm you

Tonight flew DFW-DCA in F on an Oasis 737.
I changed to that flight at the last minute so I didn't get to pre order.
The choice was beef with macaroni and cheese or falafel.

I wasn't in the mood for beef and asked the F/A how was the falafel. He described it as normal falafel but was no sauce over some spiced orzo. He told me it came back largely uneaten on his last segment.

Let me emphasize I'm an EXP and multi-million miler. This was one of the grossest meals I've ever had on AA. I would not recommend this. The falafel was dry and the orzo too salty.

It's almost as if they were joking around in the kitchen trying to make it as gross as possible yet pass inspection.

I know in MCE you get free booze, but are snacks free? On our fight from PHL-PHX hubby and I were in MCE, and ordered some food and were never charged.... Is this something new?

No. You got lucky with a benevolent or confused FA.

After dinner in FFD...

... I took one for the team and the photo op.

I pre-ordered the Hindu special. Will follow with the Muslim and Kosher options later in the month.

The Chicken curry dish was delicious, especially if you like curry and spicy.

Which reminds me of the best T-shirt from the 2016 Cavs championship win over the Warriors...
