History of AA flight #9

I thought that for the past few decades that all of AA’s single digit flight numbers were assigned to flight between LAX/JFK and DFW/Hawaii.
Today I learned that AA9 now flies MSY-DFW. Seems odd - has AA9 been assigned to this route for decades like the other single digit flight numbers? If yes, why? If no, what route was it historically assigned to?

Glancing through some historic timetables, it looks like AA9 did previously serve JFK-LAX. But it wasn't consistently on the schedule (for instance, it's missing from the 2001 timetable).

I think the numbering became very scrambled with the two major mergers/acquisitions, TW and US.

I do miss the day of single-digit flight numbers exclusively on the transcons and Hawaii, though!

On the other hand, AA appears to be the only airline still offering a flight 1492 to CMH :)

I loved the days of flight 001 and 002 on BA between JFK and LHR

The same flight numbers were used by Pan Am for their daily round the world flights, one going east and the other going west. At any instant in time there would be two of them going east and two going west as the trip took over 24 hours. These routes were subsequently acquired and flown by UA although UA discontinued the eastbound segment out of Delhi and the westbound into Delhi after a few years. I had taken these flights on numerous occasions and as a result ended up with a lifetime Clipper Club membership which was converted into a Delta Lifetime Crown Club membership when Delta acquired Pan Am's European routes and the Frankfurt hub.

HP/US had single digit flights PHX-ORD. Guess that was the flagship flight 30 years ago.

I was just thinking the same thing! 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 were PHX-ORD and the even numbers on the way back.
Then 11, 13, 15, 17, and 19 were PHX-JFK, with the even numbers the return.
Those kept for a while into the US merger.

I have flown this just once, but it gave me a chuckle.

Almost there still. It's just JFK to LCY now.

and it went from one of the prettiest aircraft ever made to a bloated toy looking a318.

AA 420 flies PHX-DEN-PHX. That's not a coincidence.

PBIGuy Nov 25, 2018 7:17 am

Pre-HP US used single digit to Europe. 1 and 2 were PHL-FCO.
