Main Cabin Extra (MCE) or Premium Economy - recent change?

Hi folks,

I'm travelling to the US with AA, as an OWE last time I was able to select an MCE seat in the front smaller cabin on the 777-300ER. Now though it looks like this is branded as a separate "Premium Economy" cabin, rather than the ususal MCE cabin last time I flew with them.

Has this changed recently or am I missing something?

Thanks!

Yes, on the 77W, that small cabin has been reconfigured in terms of seats and seat arrangement and has been rebranded Premium Economy which is effectively a separate class of service. The 77W now has four classes of service - F-J-PEY-Y.

Damn, so much for AA saying they didn't see value in PE.

Thanks for the info anyway folks!

I’d recommend more reading of FT . The rollout of Premium Economy (the 787-9 was “out of the box”) has been a topic of discussion here for some time. (Iirc the only widebodies not scheduled for PE are the A330-300 and the 767-300.)

Yep which is a bummer out of CLT since they fly a good bit of A333s from here.

Safe Travels

These planes still have MCE though, right? Just further back than before?

And narrower. Previous MCE on the 77W was 3+3+3, current MCE is 3+4+3 (though, oddly, never with all MCE seats present in a row), and PE is 2+4+2.

I'm EP and was booked in O going LAX-LHR and was automatically offered P at check-in on the app. Can others confirm if this is random or some unwrit policy perk for EPs, PPs?

I didn't appreciate the difference btwn PE and MC until I had to fly back in MC (22J) aisle with no 21J in front of me on HKG-LAX flight. Just the extra 6 inches, pitch and less overcrowding were not so subtle differences on a 12+ hr flight I surely won't take for granted ever again!

Note I was waitlisted with SWUs on both legs aforementioned but didn't make the cut

This was reason I greatly prefer UA. Their equivalent to MCE is economy plus and availability is about twice that of AA and DL.

Will United be cutting back E+ as it adds premium economy to its fleet?
