Officially upgraded, but left in Coach

I was on flight today with open seats in F - The gate agent/FA upgraded folks
I was not invited, yet I was #2 on list
I checked my app and AA.com and it says I was upgraded
I took a pic of me in Coach :-)

I asked the GA why I was not upgraded and received "I've got to get this flight out" response and she turned away

Any thoughts?

Did the app show your FC seat assignment? If so, did you see whether that seat flew empty or was taken, perhaps by someone in an AA uniform?

You should report this incident to AA and ask very explicitly what happened to your upgrade. If you were charged for the upgrade in some way (miles, money, stickers) be sure to insist on a refund.

What seat does it say you were in? I've boarded a plane and refreshed the app only to see I was upgraded. I usually just walk up to F and ask the FA what seat I'm in. They can tell you from their devices.

Wouldn't your boarding pass have changed, or wouldn't you have been able to print a new boarding pass at a kiosk?

Unfortunately it's necessary to be pretty proactive in these situations.

Whenever I've been upgraded, my boarding pass in the AA app is updated when I refresh it. Did that not happen for you?

Been a while since I flew (or was upgraded) on AA, but ... how can you clear an upgrade and not have a seat assignment in F?

The "I've got to get this flight out" line just shows the current culture of AA, get the flight out/doors closed at D-0, customer service and common sense be damned.

Something similar just happened to a passenger at PHL just now. His BP beeped and the GA told him "I'm sorry I gave away your seat". Apparently he'd been upgraded but got his new BP on his phone, not physically at the gate, so the GA gave away his F seat. But to add icing on the cake, the GA gave away this gentleman's MCE seat to a CK on the standby list and told him in front of us "well he's a CK so I can't change his seat". So this guy who should've been in F gets demoted to row 30. And the GA's response? "I'm sorry but this is a system issue and it happens all the time on the phones. I'll see if I can talk to the flight attendant and get you a free drink". So it seems AA would be very aware of this and probably just doesn't care.

Not only that but there are several open MCE seats (in flight now). Did the GA come on board and "upgrade" him to MCE? Nope. Going for great!

This guy was extremely understanding though, hardly complained at all. Handled it way better than I would've! I guess this is the good thing about not clearing upgrades anymore is we never have to worry about missing an upgrade!

So possibly did the GA go ahead and assign the seat to someone else (probably an employee) and therefore no seat assignment showed?

I would not hesitate to complain and report. Doing nothing changes nothing.

I had this happen to me several years ago on PHL-PHX. I complained both orally (on the plane and at PHX customer service) and in writing to no avail.
