Exclamation The Last Row Experience

I will preface that on narrow body flights, 99% of my seats flown have been exit or forward of that. So on my recent standby flight, SNA-DFW the GA gave me 30D and said he would keep the middle seat open. He said that would be better than an open middle seat further forward. I took his word, thanked him and waited for Group 4. I get settled in and soon notice that it felt a lot less clausterphobic than say 23D, and certainly 23E. We pushed back on time and were #1 for takeoff. What surprised me next was how loud the engines were back there, it drowned out my headphones on takeoff. I liked that, engines are awesome. All is going well, seat reclines nicely, more than I was expecting, and the open seat is providing extra space for me and the young lady at the window to place random stuff. All is good. Then BAM, out of nowhere, people start using the lav and I'm hit with some of the worst stink my nose nerve has ever dealt with. This situation never even crossed my mind. I was trapped. Needing to escape, but no place to go. Several of the miscreant passengers made eye contact with me as they were striding down the aisle and they gave me a smile. How's a person going to smile at me knowing whats coming my way. I swear, some people... Thankfully, that passed after the early rush, and the rest of the flight was olfactory neutral.

With ~150 passengers over one-sixth of a waking day, it's numerically inevitable

The release of gases often occurs simultaneously with the release of liquids, without requiring the release of solids.

Also, people waiting in the corridor to use the facility are often the source of detectable emissions.

True, but if you sit in the back of an MD-80, you don't have to worry about crying babies or screaming kids And the lavs are placed in a way that the smells are not as bad as the 738s.

Honestly, I haven't either - but I've been in the unenviable position of very quickly needing to in NY Penn concourse, so I can understand the emergencies.

Though what really gets me is after push-back and taxi, takeoff, immediately 5-6 people get up to use the restroom. I know bladder issues and all, but seriously we were in the terminal 20 minutes ago...
