AA plans manager layoffs, buyouts 5 years after US-AA merger

AA is preparing for some management-level layoffs and buyouts in an effort to slim down five years after its merger with US Airways, the airline told employees on Tuesday.

Not much else in the report but here is the link to the report....

A good start would be the Director of Onboard Product from US Airways.

Corporate Sales in NYC seems like easy pickings since AA is essentially giving up on really trying for this market......the FL at JFK is majority non-AA OW fliers it appears and JFK-T8 in general is a ghost town before 2pm.

Unfortunately he's here to stay but I wish the first one gone would be Parker.

Isn’t Doug loyal to his own? Considering AA was basically taken over by the ex-US management I suspect it’ll be the ex-AA people taking the brunt of hits.

This could be bad for whatever left of AA is left in this new "American Airlines".

Same song-different industry

(Full power to cynicism)

Having spent 40+ years in the financial services industry, this a favorite tactic when senior management feels that their bonuses may be in jeopardy. Reduce head count of junior and middle management, sales force, and "redundant" staff, resulting in savings in salary and commissions paid, benefits expense, T & E, etc.. Survivor workloads (and sales targets and sales territories) can double, with NO additional compensation.

At no time will ANY member of senior management be harmed, become unemployed, or have their compensation/pay plan negatively affected. In some cases, cost savings might equal the bonus pool.

Financial Services/Money Management is a numbers/profitability driven environment. Is AA senior management's focus any different?

(Cynicism off)

I'm not putting on my Kevlar/Teflon body armor for this one-I've seen it from both sides. People who love sausage and corporate policy should never see either being made.

The actual letter is posted on One Mile At a Time. Perhaps the most amount of meaningless corporate speak ever compacted into a single letter. What a waste of time and words.

I guess they have to pay for the new HQ somehow. I drive by it everyday and it's nice.

Plus they also have to pay for all those new planes entering the fleet. And of course the CEO's bonus.

Clear communication and transparency don't exist within AA management's vision / execution.

Still not sure why they didn't just keep the HQ in Tempe, considering AA is USAir in executive and policy.

"Bonuses" for relocation sometimes equal salary x 2,3,4, and/or permanent % bump in salary (and perhaps bonus). Also add % bump in expense account budget.

Relocation is at corporate expense.
