AA Destroys a Bag, Issues $3,500 Check + $300 Voucher in 24 Hours

You and I should be so lucky.

Kristen Horabin got her soft-sided checked bag at the DFW carousel after a trip from TPA shredded, missing about 50% of its contents and some of the remaining items coated with toothpaste and grease, poured into a bin. She was told by baggage staff to file a loss report, and

Within 24 hours of reporting it, Horabin told WFAA, American Airlines apologized and told her it was sending her a $3,500 check for the damages, as well as a $300 travel voucher.

Amazing and speedy action by AA!

Next we will probably hear how Kristen Horabin is lawyering up and suing AA for $1million due to pain and suffering...

But seriously, good on American for acting quickly

Only if there was a dog stuffed in the bag.

Good on AA.

Do you have any particular insight into the lost belongings?

How'd they get a picture of the stuff that was lost after it was lost?

Looks like they correctly figured out a quick $3500 is probably worth more than that in positive earned media, especially compared to the alternative if AA chose to be difficult and her story went viral for the wrong reason. My guess (and it is only that) is that United wished it had just paid the guy whose guitar got trashed a few years back to preempt the viral negative publicity....It's not like this is an easily manipulated circumstance where AA has to worry about copycats with their hands out for the unjust enrichment. On the other hand, I don't know how many bags get chewed up like that, which may now result in an expectation for a payout for those who are so, uh, unfortunate. (AA can mangle my bag and I'd be happy for well less than $3,500....)

Come to think of it, maybe I can get in cahoots with a ramp agent who can make sure my bag gets shredded, and he gets 25%....

No, I was judging based on the value of stuff I put in my bag, and stories from other passengers regarding receipts, etc

This. Sure they could have saved a grand or two but thats pittance for an airline as large as AA. Good press, happy customer, low cost to make it go away.

Overall, well done.
