Yes, sorry to have omitted that detail but I did mean to covey this. (Can a moderator fix that?) I am gutted as the NY connection was a very good option to get to LHR for a decent price, cheaper in business than flying in coach on BA.

I suspect it doesn't work anywhere near as well as GIG-JFK-LHR, as the GIG-JFK flight connected quite nicely with the daylight JFK-LHR. There's no similar flight out of MIA, which would mean a ~13 hour layover in MIA (4am arrival, 5pm departure, give or take).

No, it’s not, actually, as direct flights can include stops; nonstops are, well, nonstop.
(AA 48 was marketed as a direct flight: SFO-DFW-ZRH. At DFW changes of aircraft and terminals were generally required. Mileage and segment credit was accrued as if AA 48 was a nonstop flight; it wasn’t.)

All nonstop flights are direct.
Not all direct flights are nonstop.
It is perfectly correct to call this a direct flight. And the vast majority of readers seeing that title would also correctly understand that this is a direct (nonstop) flight.
