I would say that my experiences being upgraded with my companion vs without has been the same percentage for both domestic and international flights. As for being skipped over, I actually got an upgrade by myself two weeks ago while my companion didn’t on an AKL-LAX flight and I ended declining the upgrade. So I’m not quite sure that you and your companion are being passed over. More likely people are upfaring or buying into first

do you still have to do the whole reconnect thing at the airport with companions?

If they have any elite status, yes.
