How come no AA nonstop ORD-AMS?
Just was curious if anyone knows why there is such little capacity nonstop to AMS out of ORD? There is only a KLM 744 combi and a UA 763 on this route.
Surely there is more demand on this route that AA could put a 788 or 763 on it I would think? |
AA fails on lots of international routes that UA makes work out of ORD. Just look at route announcements this week.
Alternately, this is a list of international routes from ORD that AA has tried and dropped or reduced, as noted by an a.net poster: fAAilure at ORD: ARN: Can't compete with SK BHX: Gone BRU: Gone (at one time was a 777) CDG: Now seasonal DEL: AI killed the yields, but the flight was packed. DME: Started with a 777 due to 767 unable to land there. But still a dog. DUS: Can't compete with UA/LH JV EZE: Only worked in Dec. FRA: Can't compete with UA/LH JV GLA: Gone HEL: Moved to AY MAN: Struggling, down to a few months a year MEX: Gone MUC: Can't compete with UA/LH JV MXP: Gone NGO: No yields. Filled the back, but not the front. PEK: Going away. STN: Gone YKF: Gone YWG: Gone ZRH: Gone |
With a *A hub on one end and a SkyTeam hub on the other, it's not surprising that AA has stayed away.

wow - this list makes it seem even more depressing then I thought.
In any case, PHL has some of those coveted, and AA apparently seems satisfied with pax connection ting there. |
AA flies DFW-AMS. AA tends to prefer DFW for central US to Europe flights.
|
The main answer to the question is very simple, AA biggest partner BA is in LHR, and that is where they will fly to Europe and connect from there. UA has LH over Germany, SK in Scandinavian, LO in Poland, and others; DL has AF on France, KL on the Netherlands, AZ in Italy. There is no other big 1W hub in Europe other than LHR where AA can make it. The European flyer will prefer the local home carrier or its alliance partner to take him to/from the US, most EU carriers are not 1W.

It is interesting. I would have imagined the legacies would all have at least a flight to LHR, AMS, CDG and FRA from all their big hubs, even if operated by a partner (i.e. their European 'twin'). AA definitely doesn't even come close though. United and Delta also have their 'gaps' but still seem to have a more complete route network to the major European airports. It's not just ORD either..AA doesn't offer New York to AMS or FRA either.

United's biggest partner in Europe is Lufthansa..so by that notion they should only fly to Frankfurt and Munich then from ORD. But they do offer AMS, CDG and LHR. Delta's biggest partners are KLM and AF..so they should only fly to CDG and AMS..but they do offer..for example..DTW to FRA.
