Flagship First cabin experience: LAX-JFK-LHR

I recently had the joy of my first flagship first trip. LAX -> JFK -> LHR. I was very happy with the small details, at LAX, the captain coming out and welcoming each first class passenger individually, at JFK the escort to first dining at the lounge, and probably my favourite bedding of any flight yet (compared to CX, QF, TG, BA). After a lot of bad AA experiences, this one was particularly nice.

Glad you enjoyed it -- but other than those two routes (and SFO-JFK), I wonder if Flagship First is profitable on any other AA route? Or does it fill up with upgraders and employee class?

That's the whole point. The two TCON routes are the only domestic routes branded as FF. On the international routes with F, there is a goodly amount of paid F, particularly non-US companies which pay for F as a matter of course on long-haul.

Glad you had a great F experience. How was the onboard service?

I agree that the widebody F and J product is pretty damn good. I wonder what would have happened had Parker not rescued AA from bankruptcy and elevated the level of service?

The 77W predates Parker by a little bit. Lol

To the OP - I'm curious why you didn't go LAX-LHR on the 77W instead.

The existence of flagship first to JFK allows them to keep large contracts that would otherwise abscond. United learned it the hard way when they consolidated transcontinental service to Newark.

https://skift.com/2017/04/21/united-...rong-decision/

In his response to the employee at the town hall meeting, Kirby suggested United executives did not think strategically before dropping the JFK flights. The routes may have been unprofitable alone, but the customers on them were unusually important.

“The real reason it was a mistake was it let American Airlines in particular go win a bunch of big corporate accounts,” he said. “People like Disney and Time Warner — two big examples — are corporate accounts that had been United exclusive corporate accounts and not only flew United on the transcon [routes] but flew United from L.A. to Heathrow and all across the country.”

Many of the corporate contracts were unusual because the companies cared less about pricing than typical businesses, Kirby said. Actors, for example, usually must fly in premium cabins — regardless of whether the fare is $1,000 or $10,000.

“Those are the kind of corporate accounts [where] on-air talent has contracts that say they fly first class,” he said. “They pay first class fares — it’s completely irrelevant what the price is. … We opened the door and let American in on contracts like that.”

Definitely no reason to lump these two together.

For the chance to experience the Flagship First Dining in LAX and JFK on the same itinerary of course! A better routing would be LAX > JFK > MIA > LHR for the sake of comparison

I was scheduled on BA LAX to LHR direct on the A380, but award space came up via JFK getting me in early enough to catch a better connecting flight, and almost 9 hours extra with family in Copenhagen. As much as I hated giving up BA a380 first direct, this ended up being a great option.

I get that you mean this firmly tongue in cheek, but I do wonder sometimes. I imagine the Flagship First product would be (far?) better than it is now.
