ITA Matrix, limited to two AA-coded segments in each direction, NYC-CUN, 8 days, in June, finds fares at $502.
Same criteria, NYC, MEX, fares from $491
Open jaw, into MEX, out of CUN: $484
Open jaw, into CUN, out of MEX: $509
One way NYC-CUN: $244
One way NYC-MEX: $367
I don't see a general one way or open jaw USA-Mexico problem based on those results.
