Soon after the 13 April 2018 allied France - United Kingdom - USA missile strike against Syria chemical facilities, AA ceased routing flights between DFW and HKK / PEK over Russian airspace, requiring a technical stop at LAX and adding ~4 hours to flight times.

This is now over and flights are again flying between DFW and HKG or PEK nonstop as of Tuesday, 17 April 2018, according to the Reuters story quoted in part below, posted by lobo411.

U.S. trade group Airlines for America said on Tuesday that it had been told by the U.S. State Department that a deal had been reached with Russia to allow U.S. airlines to fly in Russian airspace.

We have received confirmation from the State Department that overflight approvals have been extended through the schedule season, and carriers are continuing to conduct normal operations through Russian airspace, Airlines for America said in a statement. Link

Both today’s and tomorrow’s flight 125 are scheduled to operate via LAX, presumably with no equipment change, incurring an estimated 4 hour arrival delay. Has anyone on the ground been told a reason for this?

I am on the flight on Monday and will need to make alternate plans if such a routing remains in place.

As a consequence, flight 192, from HKG to LAX, will also likely be delayed on the 15th and 16th. The Dallas flight typically turns to LAX in HKG.

I'm no expert at reading wind aloft forecasts, but looks like there might be some large headwinds on the route the next couple days. Probably a refuel stop before running the TPAC sector. FWIW, looks like CX has been running the JFK-HKG route going East which is ~250 miles longer for them than going west, would seem that the winds are more than normal.

Thanks, makes sense. Cant do DFW-HKG non stop without flying over Russia.

However, today's DFW to PVG and PEK flights are still planned to go over Russia. Wonder if its just something with that particular route.

Update:
The DFW-PEK flight has now been planned to operate via LAX, while the PVG flight has been rerouted around Russian airspace.

JonNYC is reporting on Twitter that people can be rerouted into BA/IB/AY/JL due to these reroutes.

It's not just DFW flights. ORD-PEK too.

Original arrival time for today's (Saturday) AA 187 ORD-PEK was Sunday at 8:20pm.
Now Monday around 4:00am. Operating via LAX. Yuck.

This is an interesting development. I wonder if it's just AA being over-cautious or there is something else in play. I assume most US carriers have at least some flights that require Russian airspace (DL, UA...) and obviously a restriction like this would gut someone like AY (and perhaps BA and other European carriers).

FYI, UAL ORD-PEK about to overfly a large chunk of Russian airspace: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/...745Z/KORD/ZBAA

So this would appear to be AA only....?

LAX to HKG

I received a similar notice for LAX to HKG. I assume this is because of the DFW restriction or would my LAX flight to HKG also be expected to need a refuel? Im catching a CX flight in HKG and that is my main concern

Just got off the phone with AA. She flat out told me it's in regards to the Syria situation.

Not too shocking an agent would make something up. Its pure coincidence.
