AA award (maybe) and Aus (VA/QF) paid? Protections? Baggage? Award strategy?

Exactly. I'd hold the, "AAnytime," awards in my back pocket and book only if things get too close and the OP wants to book something.
When I first started looking, I saw those, "AAnytime," awards, sought advice from some friends (who told me to route through Asia), some told me to find someone who specializes in booking award travel, and then I got a subscription to Expert Flyer. Immediately I found award availability on EY (F/apartments), but it was JFK-AUH-SYD, 2 awards, and I'd still have to get myself to JFK, plus it adds a bit of time to an already long trip. Like I said above, a few days later I found availability on QF.
I think even the JFK-AUH-SYD routing is fewer miles, or similar, than an, "AAnytime," award.

Mmmm -- so long as the cabin doesn't fill. Perhaps that's long odds against, but I might do it for preferred seats.
Is there any recognizable pattern as to when sAAver space may open, or is it a totally fluid demand-management thing?
