You might check https://www.regulations.gov/docket?D=DOT-OST-2015-0087 . I think that's the same issue, albeit a few years ago. Thought AA promised to fix it. If AA didn't fix it, you might post details here of what you figured out.

I phoned twice. First time I was told "Awards are different. If that's what the computer says it is, then that's what it is." Second time I phoned I was told "Call in after you make the booking and we *may* be able to refund the APD." Hence my posting here to see if others have experienced this and solved the problem.
