Looks like they are offering to upgrade your basic economy ticket to a flexible (economy) ticket.

If you look closely, you'll see they're actually offering a flexible ?????? ticket. One of AA's finest offerings.

Wouldn't going back to the main page showing all fares allow one to determine what the upgraded ticket would be--whatever ticket would be offered for $284?
$45 is a great deal; I'd take that. I've never seen a ticket on AA priced that low.

What exactly is unclear? One is a Basic Economy fare and one is a fully-refundable fare which means they are on absolute opposite ends of the spectrum. With one fare you can't choose seats, you can bring 1-bag on-board that can only go under your seat (no overhead bin use), it earns no miles in any frequent flier program, and the ticket is not changeable or refundable. The flexible ticket is one that many businesses will buy because plans change all the time and they want to be able to cancel or change it at any time.

The term "upgrade" is perhaps a bit confusing to the pedant, but as a practical matter, this is an offer to convert a BE ticket to a fully flexible economy ticket.

OP is not asking whether there is a value proposition, he is asking whether the offer is "bizarre". It is not bizarre, simply that there is not likely value here. $240 is the cost of a new flexible ticket on that flight and $45 is what you have already paid for the BE ticket. Thus, the offer is simply consistent with BE fare rules, e.g., you lose the value of your BE ticket and then pay the cost of the new ticket.

Ok, point out exactly where it says the upgrade is to "economy."

One of those rare mystery upgrades, maybe you can convince the GA to put you in the cockpit?

For all the replies that are attempting to explain the difference between BE and Y, you’re missing the joke.

The OP is making fun and of the fact that the screen literally shows “???????” as the upgrade class.

I think people are missing the fact AA's website is showing upgrade to ???????

Presumably it's the question marks appearing that is bizarre...

That's how I looked at it. But then again, nothing surprises me these days when I shop for airline fares. Over on UA the other day I was pricing IAD-SFO, and on one flight the Basic Economy fare was higher than the regular economy fare.

I vote for ??????. Then see what that gets you.

You could either be picked up in a nice caddy like CK or unceremoniously kicked out like Dr. Dao. Live a little!!

Lol. This thread is funnier than AA’s mystery upgrade.

You need to do it just to see what happens. At least, for all of our entertainment. Besides, with a glitch like that you can probably argue for a refund if it's not any value.
