Welcome to the 2018 "NEWBIE LOUNGE"
Ask Your Consolidated / Combined AA Questions Here (flame free)

MODERATOR GUIDEPOST:
(This post can only be edited by moderators.)

Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

NOTE: This is a "flame free" thread; flaming, personal criticism for "failing to search" etc. is not allowed (if posted, the post will be summarily deleted, the poster subject to sanctions).

Advanced questions posed by veteran FT users may be moved and / or merged into existing master or GUIDE threads, most of which have Wikiposts at the top of the page that contain summaries of important information.

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.

Don't hesitate to contact a moderator or another member if you have any additional questions. You can PM the Moderators by clicking on , which pops up a message box; the message goes to all this forum's Moderators. Note that unlike some sites with paid staff moderators, FlyerTalk Moderators are volunteers, and most work, travel, go on holiday, etc. You can Private Message us using the PM system (My Flyertalk) and our handles.

We're glad you've chosen to join the Flyertalk frequent flyer community!

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:

Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:

Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a Wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

FlyerTalk Rules (We all agree to abide by these, and are held accountable.)

Though you may have what appears to be a return award, in fact you have two awards. AA only offers one way Awards, so you have two awards: JFK-GIG, and GRU-JFK, even if they’re on the same PNR. (If you were to cancel them, you’d have to pay $175 to redeposit the miles from both awards.) See HELP DESK: MileSAAver / SAAver award questions, assistance, particularly the Wikipost at the top of the page.

You can’t change the destination or origin of an award, except in limited circumstances - in which segments may be dropped or added according to certain very specific rules. And awards do not acknowledge the existence of co-terminals. You will have to redeposit one award ($150) and, assuming there is award space on your desired routing, have the award reissued. See

This is 100% not true, it is no problem to add a segment onto an existing award without affecting the original segment, the whole thing absolutely does not need to be cancelled and rebooked.

Not sure it's an entirely newbie question but here it is. If I do an award booking for a family relative and I am on a cash ticket for a larger itinerary, can I ask to have the two tickets linked to be able to select seats for the family relative and seat together on that segment? Can the linking be done on several segments against different one way award?

There's no such thing as "linking" per se, however if you have a friend or family member on any of your flights all you have to do is call AA and they can seat them next to you in MCE or preferred seats for no charge. It makes no difference if your itineraries are exactly the same or completely different except for 1 or 2 flights.

Apparently, it is becoming more difficult to do this than previously under some circumstances, with married segment logic and AA enforcement.

American Cracking Down on Award Availability Trick (and Gutting Free Elite Changes)

Now, however, if the flights I want to add aren’t available as part of the married itinerary American won’t let me add them to what’s already booked. The award change flexibility afforded top elites essentially goes out the window.
If the changes fall afoul of married segment technology or the use of co-terminals is considered, ouch.

Maybe I am misunderstanding married segment logic...but if two segments are available individually, why would married segment logic prevent both of them from being combined? For instance, in Gary's example, if AUS-DFW and DFW-LAX are available, why can't one book AUS-DFW-LAX? I would understand the problem if dropping one segment eliminates marriage between/among segments, but I don't really understand the problem when trying to add a segment that in and of itself is available, which is the case in this particular instance with adding a SDU/CGH segment.

I guess, in other words, does married segments logic really limit available routings between city pairs to particular flights, which seems to have to be the case for it to be impossible to remove and to add segments to an itinerary?

I just booked a paid RT with booking code I from GSO to AMS for this summer, how long will it take for BA to respond for the 2 segments we will fly with them?

What do you mean for BA to respond?

My booking shows "On Request" for the BA segments. Well it did, it has now been ticketed so the the answer, for me, is about an hour

Yep, typically takes anywhere from 30 mins to 24 hrs.

I flew last Sunday with Cathay Pacific from CKG -> HKG -> NRT and the miles still haven't been posted on my account. Will I receive miles for this flight? I called and requested the miles on the AA line. If understand correctly, since this is a Cathay Pacific flight number and has the 'H' code, I should receive 0.5 EQM. According to Webflyer, this route should net me about 1925 miles. Can someone confirm this for me?

If you purchased an eligible fare (H is eligible) then the miles should post, it's only been 4 or 5 days, sometimes partners can take a while. My last flight on CX took about a week to post.

I'm EXP and my girlfriend is PLT, we go through this exercise a lot.
So, having not done as suggest here cost an upgrade today. I’m now PPRO, 2 seats available, but I was 1, partner 9. Should have sorted this out before hand, but been hectic with work.

Gate agent absolutely did not want to hear it, so will send a note to AA, see what they say. Frustrating, but far from the end of the world.

My own fault for not acting on advice.

Does AA not have any Business MileSaver availability to Europe in September? I'm trying to take my wife to Switzerland in Business Class. I'm really willing to go through any US gateway city to most European gateways (will just take train or cheap euro carrier from there to ZHR) but AA is forcing the BA nonsense with the $$$$ fuel surcharge fees for premium cabins. All the AA flights are requiring AAnytime mile rates.
