I've had the same experience out of DFW recently. Out of my 4 years traveling for work, this is the first year I've had to fly WN or get to a city the night before.

I've noticed that the LUS management is more likely to look at daily demand/revenue management.

So, for example, I've always known flight 10 and 30 as the 9ish and 11ish redeyes from LAX to JFK. They don't run everyday anymore. Similarly, it's hard to get late flights out of some cities back to a hub since even old AA doesn't want the plane sitting still at the hub overnight. Rather, they want the plane sitting at the spoke for a 6 AM flight.

I think this is the bigger issue. They put a lot more emphasis on connecting traffic and fewer planes RON at a hub. For example, I've recently had trouble finding flights out of DCA to my destination that leave before ~10 AM. On the other hand, going from outstation to DCA there is no trouble finding a flight at ~7 AM. As a side note, I'm perpetually amazed at how much connecting traffic AA crams into DCA (which is a tiny airport that is definitely _not_ designed for connections).

Agreed. Absolutely crazy when they read off the connection list. I still to some extent just think of DCA as an O&D airport that commands a price premium, but that is NOT at all what it is for many pax these days.

AA has killed the evening schedule into ORD in January/February for the last three or four years. It used to annoy me because I always had a January trip to SFO and the 5pm-ish SFO-ORD would always be gone, requiring another hotel night.
