Up to 30% more AAdvantage miles through SPG

Just got this email:

From September 1 through October 15, 2017, convert your Starpoints® to American Airlines AAdvantage® miles and earn up to 30% additional AAdvantage® miles from the conversions. Here’s how it works:

Earn a 20% bonus with each conversion
Earn an additional 10,000 AAdvantage® bonus miles for every 100,000 AAdvantage® miles received from conversions

As always, for every 20,000 Starpoints® transferred within the same transaction, SPG® will automatically add another 5,000 Starpoints®.

I agree. Not as good as the earlier one. Plus, you do not get the full 30% unless you convert 100,000 points (my interpretation).

Speaking of interpretations ... I don't know how to interpret this offer:

  • Is the 20% bonus on top of the normal 25% Starwood bonus (20K -> 25K)?
  • For the additional 10,000 miles, what in the world does "miles received from conversions" mean? Specifically, does it include the 20% bonus or not?

I'm honestly surprised that a self-respecting legal department would let something this imprecise out the door.

So if you convert 100k @30% wouldn’t that be better than the 25%? Or am I missing something?

Of course 30% > 25%.

I only meant that I did not find even 30% an attractive offer to convert to AA miles. But even for that 30%, one would have to transfer at least 100K points. And, as another poster has pointed out, the last offer from AA was more generous.

Are the points transferred on a 1-1 basis? (Not including the bonus pts, of course)

normal points transfer from SPG->AA at a rate of 1 SPG point -> 1 AA point
For a transfer of 20,000 points, SPG will give a bonus 5,000 points so 20,000 SPG points -> 25,000 AA points

any bonus that AA offers on points transfers from SPG is based on the total received

Looking at the details provided , AA will give a 20% bonus , so 25,000 AA points received will generate a bonus of 5,000 = 30,000 total

Transfer 100,000 and get another 10,000

so 80,000 SPG would seem to give 130,000 AA points -- which does seem like a good deal

At the moment a purchase of 20,000 SPG points is $700
A the moment a purchase of 30,000 AA points is $981.38

It's worth thinking about the value of SPG to AS transfers as well, as others have pointed out. I think it depends on the partner and destination, as well as whether you care about stopovers. If you are going to Japan on JL, AS and AA are both 60k and so moving SPG to AA is probably the best deal (my calculation is that 80k SPG->AA gets you enough for 2 tix on JL/AA to Japan with 10k AA miles leftover). But if you are going to deep SE Asia on CX, then 50k AS miles is better than 70k AA miles even with the current bonus, plus you'd get the HKG stopover w an AS redemption. Too bad AS isnt having a transfer promo for SPG miles!
