AA Ending AA Codeshare On QR / Qatar and EY / Etihad 25 Mar 2018

AA is finally putting their money where their mouth is.
Codeshare ends in March 2018.
No change to mileage earning or interline agreements afaik.

Very interesting, wow.

Gary has some coverage:

http://viewfromthewing.boardingarea....tive-march-25/

American appears to have decided they’re ‘all in’ on the strategy of getting the government to redistribute income from consumers to the big airlines. So they’re no longer going to codeshare with Etihad or Qatar.

...American tells me,

In light of our ongoing dispute over the Open Skies agreements, American Airlines notified Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways on June 29 of our decision to terminate our codeshare relationships.

Given the extremely strong public stance that American has taken on the ME3 issue, we have reached the conclusion that the codesharing relationships between American and these carriers no longer make sense for us.

This decision has no material financial impact on American and is an extension of our stance against the illegal subsidies that these carriers receive from their governments. We are committed to doing everything we can to continue to support our team members and ensure that there is fair competition between American and the Gulf carriers.

Thanks for the link, JonNYC.

Interesting bit in Gary's story, too:

Meanwhile American Airlines filed an SEC 8-K this afternoon making public that they had been notified by the Federal Trade Commission that Qatar Airways had withdrawn its earlier filed notification of intent to acquire shares in the airline and replaced it with a new notification on Monday.

This does now completely remove the ability to earn EQD's, EQM's, and EQS's on EY metal. Previously they were only earned on the AA codeshares. Still will get RDM's, but at a lower rate than booked as an AA codeshares. As a oneworld Traveller that goes to AUH every 6-8 weeks, this is going to sting. (Already stinging in that QR can't fly to AUH anymore) To get to AUH, I'm likely going to have to fly RJ or BA (Or CX into DXB).

Great news. Party's over for the ME3.

To be perfectly blunt, AA's partnerships in the Middle East with Etihad and Qatar are what has kept me loyal to AA.

If AA wants to go all-in with the antagonistic relationship and ends their partnerships, I'm gone.

The smart money says at this point that this doesn't go any further at this point; that AA reluctantly did this because there was too much pressure/noise/etc to "do nothing."

So, barring major developments, I expect everything else to remain status-quo.

It's getting tougher to keep all my flying with AA and OW. Not happy that *A is looking better and better.

I wonder if Al Baker got an email from his "dear friend" DP letting them know this was essentially just a PR formality? :D

That's a big one.

What changes regarding the ability to book EY with AA miles?

I don't think AA pushing Etihad closer to star alliance is going to be a good thing for AA and it's frequent flyer program.

JDiver Jul 12, 2017 3:42 pm

As indicated in the AA - QR codeshares thread, http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/ameri...ar-2018-a.html, Forbes has an article here.
