PHX-LAS Fare

If this post belongs in another forum, please move.

I was looking at RT fares from PHX-LAS for 6/9 - 6/11. AA is only selling Main Cabin refundable tickets, and prices are absurd! $771 for a RT. Looking at seat maps, there are tons of seats available? Other carriers are in the $275 - $350 range. I checked the calendar in Las Vegas, and there is nothing major going on. Any idea why ticket prices would be so high? I have been watching these dates for over a month without any price reduction.

The seat map is not a good indication of booked load. Other than WN all other carriers would require a connection, hence usually priced lower.

I travel this route often. Even during the peak winter travel season, prices are in the $200 - $300 range for a RT depending on how fare in advance the tickets are. A RT for this weekend, 3/31 - 4/2 is only $511.

I checked WN, and a nonstop can be had $160 - $220 for the June dates.

Is it possible there is some internal reservation error at AA causing the inflated prices?

Also, this applies to any AA hub to LAS nonstop. Whether it be LAX, DFW, MIA, ORD, etc. Prices are inordinately high for June 9 -11. For ORD, there are no Main Cabin economy seats for purchase at all!

I really wonder if somehow LAS was singled out in the reservation system, no matter the originating city.

I'm booked JFK-LAS-JFK (non-stops) 6/10 (Sat)-6/13 (Tues) in "G" class; I paid RT $392 (about half the PHX-LAS-PHX)--yes!, screwy pricing.

Almost certainly due to NBA Finals which should be in full swing that weekend. Don't want to sell too many seats too cheaply right now as they will likely command a premium. You are also searching for flights on LAS's typical high demand days -- arrive on Thu or Fri, depart on Sun or Mon. If you book a Sat - Tue trip for that weekend - the fare drops to $210.

I doubt it is due to the NBA finals. The finals are scheduled to start on 6/1 and the latest ending date is 6/18. Usually tickets to the cities participating are more expensive, not to LAS. Even during this 2 week window, flights to LAS the weekend before (6/2 - 6/4) or after (6/16 - 6/18) are still only $250. This pricing for the specific dates of 6/8 through 6/12 are perplexing.

Superbowl and March Madness are both big events in LAS irregardless of where the games are played. It wouldn't surprise me if the NBA Finals are the same. It's likely the teams will still be playing that weekend unless there is a sweep. I suspect there is not as much gambling interest in the first couple games which would explain why prices are lower for the first weekend in June. There doesn't seem to be any big conventions for that weekend, so the Finals would be the most logical explanation.

OP (in post #1 ) notes that other carries (for his exact dates) are about 1/3 of AA, wouldn't they also being charging higher prices based on sports betting issues?

So for such a short flight, you really have to ask yourself whether you need (and are willing to pay for) the 1,000 EQMs and the EQDs. Personally, I'd just take WN at a fraction of the price (and maybe pay $15 each way for Early Bird Checkin to ensure getting an aisle seat and finding space for my bag near my seat).

NBA finals are nowhere near as important to the sports betting industry in Vegas as the Super Bowl and NCAA tournament.

Regardless of your opinion on the matter, "irregardless" should not be uttered.

This might not have anything to do with Las Vegas. Check the Phoenix calendar. Perhaps one city-wide convention/event is ending 6/9 and a new one is starting on 6/11 or 6/12. That might explain why other non-LAS flights to/from PHX are expensive.

That said, that scenario doesn't explain why other carriers aren't as expensive.

Rumor is the Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather fight is that weekend which would be the biggest event in the history of Las Vegas if it is true.

The NBA Finals are not the same.

Speculated date for McGregor - Mayweather is 6/10, although this is only based on a lot of media conjecture about event scheduling at T-Mobile Arena. Not really sure AA rev management would pick up on it.
