Sign at J checkin counter at NRT on January 6. AA 170 NRT-LAX J to F for 65K JPY or about $700. I didn't take it, turns out Y wasn't quite full and J wasn't either. First time I've seen an upgrade for sale on a transpacific route without an oversell situation.

Are LBFUs offered only at the kiosk, or during OLCI will one see it offered? This upcoming weekend's ORD-MSP flights are all booked solid and zeroed out, and I have no AA status.

If they're offered at the kiosk only, I will try and get to ORD ASAP.

Yes, only at the kiosk.

Per the OP, LFBUs are kiosk-only. However, I would guess that they're more likely to be offered on flights where the load is low rather than high, to the extent that the number of elites onboard mirrors that pattern.

Yes, but one can hope. Without status, and all flights for the day looking extremely full, we would just like to have seats together so I can help my wife with our infant. My ST loyalties have dictated that I have not been on AA metal since 2002, and I am sure things have changed since then.

If the flight is really zeroed out, LFBUs will likely not be offered. Get to your gate early, and as soon as the agent arrives, explain your situation w/regard to an infant, desiring seats together. AA holds a number of seats back for airport control and the GA will be able to assist you.

LAX-NRT

Flying AA 169 LAX-NRT tomorrow. We're in J on VIPs. EF shows F7 J7 Y7. Is it likely that LFBUs will be offered? Can I check in with an agent and then check in again at a kiosk to see if LFBUs are offered, or would I need to go to the kiosk first?

Why do you want LFBUs if you are already in J?

My recollection is fuzzy, but I believe that:
(1) International LFBUs are rare
(2) All LFBUs are purely kiosk-based
(3) There are no J to F LFBUs

I could be wrong on one or all of the above.

(1) Not in this economy, especially on BOS/JFK/ORD-LHR.
(2) In the U.S., yes. For travel originating outside the U.S., no.
(3) Yes, there are. J to F is $750.

I never use the kiosks for international, and haven't flown international coach on AA in years, so I have no personal experience with LFBU. After reading about it here, I was hoping it would be a way to go from J to F. (Posts in this thread can get hazy, mixing domestic kiosk, domestic op-up, domestic stickers, international outstation pay-at-the-desk offers, international kiosk, international op-up, and more.)

Go to the kiosk. I've seen people read the offer at a kiosk, then go to an agent only to have the agent say, you need to book a the kiosk.

As others have said. You must go to the kiosk first.
