I had to accept the $0 upgrade offer Y -> PEY. Who doesn't? LOL
However, I had to call EXP desk to re-list my SWU.
I got PEY -> C upgrade by SWU at the gate.

On my departure day PEY seats were all occupied, but W and P were still available according to EF.
Since J was not full at that point I figured AA would move PEY passengers to J or process upgrade to C.
I got PEY -> C upgrade at the gate. Actually it was double upgrades. I took Y -> PEY $0 upgrade offer during OLCI the day before my departure.
Then my SWU to C cleared at the gate.

This is a very interesting point made by the last two posters and also explains what I noticed about the gate upgrades: When PE is full, the GAs started clearing the upgrade list out of order by upgrading PE passengers first, even though they were not at the top of the UG list. I was watching the list like a hawk, lol, and confronted them about this (I was above them on the UG list), and they said that they had to clear a couple of PE passengers first, which I was confused and miffed about, but now it all makes sense as to why...Good thing I cleared anyway or it would have been a scene for sure...

Is it worth the money to upgrade to Premium economy over say an exit row in normal economy? What are the pros/cons?

Pros:

Better food
Better seat
Better amenities
More leg room
Potentially more attentive service

Cons:

Higher price

There's an entire thread dedicated to this route and the experience:

It might be helpful and get you better information if you changed the thread title to reflect HKG-LAX-HKG. Just in case there are people who haven't memorized the schedule.

I mean, if they haven’t memorized the schedules and numbers for AA long-haul flights, then they aren’t dedicated FlyerTalkers at all. Oh for shame!

My only comment is 10 abreast eating in AA 77W economy including MCE. Definitely a modern cruel and unusual punishment.

I am on 192 today, and for the first time ever I was able to do a mobile check-in for an international flight (newly minted green card holder). I got the $0 PE offer but it was a tease, after "accepting", I wasn't able to choose a PE seat and AA's Twitter team found no record of it ever being offered to me. Weird. Looking at the upgrade list right now I'd say it's a toss up as to whether I go Y-J with my systemwide (I'm a low spend EXP...#9 on the list and it looked like there were 11 open J seats earlier). Anyone had a similar experience with the PE Upgrade "offer" and are there any remedies available?

CX has also reconfigured most of their 77Ws to 10 abreast...the A350 is a much better option if forced to fly Y (like I am) with them if you can get it.

EDIT: I actually made it and I'm in 14D now, 9/12 on the upgrades that cleared...whew!

I wonder how much AA pays CX, JAL for handling all the folks who can't wait for the next day flight on an annual basis??

I had fantastic experience with this flight a couple weeks ago, could not have been any happier with the result! I had book J and used a SWU to upgrade to F (cleared at booking) a couple months before the flight, well the day I'm supposed to leave I wake up in HKG to discover my flight was 6.5 hours delayed which is pretty crap...unless @:-) due to the absurdly long delay you can get AA to push the ticket to CX and push it over in the upgraded cabin (F). Had about 5 bottles of vintage 2004 Krug, a meal that was several orders of magnitude better than what AA would ever offer, a great Bordeaux and of course flawless service. So while I'm sure the frequent issues on these HKG flights might seem troublesome, when you play the cards right you can take a long delay and turn it into a win.

Hah, we are on HKG-LAX next January all upgraded from J to F and in the back of my head i was wondering what the chances are that something like that happens. I doubt there would be sufficient CX or JL F space for all 5 of us.
