20 Mad Dogs / MD-80 (retiring) to ROW today (23 Aug 2016)

Read on another somewhat reputable site that AA have 20 Mad Dogs (MD-82 and MD-83) on their way to the boneyard. I decided to do a quick check on my favourite app, and sure enough found 10 so far en route (plus one poor EMB-135, which will probably be full of flight crews on its next rotation). Sad times.

Here's the screen shot showing them all (sorry for the large size).

ETA: Just noticed that fellow member Longboater mentioned this a bit earlier in another thread, as did northwesterner.

For better or for worse, definitely nearing the end of an era.

Sad day. I've seen 738's showing up in OKC - I am on one next weekend and again in October. First time since moving to OKC in 04 that I can remember flying on a non-MD80 mainline flight.

I always figured OKC would be one of the last markets to see the MD pulled due to short distance (from DFW), so if they are starting to disappear here the overall fleet count must be getting pretty small.

Good riddance.

When I lived in STL, it was pretty much an entirely Mad Dog operation. I will not miss them. The 738 is a far superior aircraft.

Supposedly there will be a little more than 50 MD80s left at year end. What seems to be questioned (at least on airliners.net) is will the MD80 be gone for good by year end 2017. I will miss the really comfy F seat and the 2L seats.

Fittingly for the New AA, many are showing delayed on FR24.

Yes, after all these years I will miss MD80s. However, I also remember back at good old days of before tablets, iTunes, smart phone, etc. flying MD80 on ORD-SFO. Had to make sure I had magazines or books I enjoyed. Forgot, we did have WalkMan back then.

I think it's pretty much accepted the remaining 52 MD-80s (eoy 2016) will be retired in 2017.

The AA Fleet Site has a list of MD-80s (and other aircraft) here.

"It’s the wind down of the summer travel season,” American spokesman Josh Freed, adding that American doesn’t need as many aircraft to fly its fall schedule.

Some of the newer MD80s are as new as the oldest 738s. I assume most of the vintage 1980s models will be retired by the end of this year or early 2017.

I'll miss the Mad Dogs. Real seats in F rather than padded benches. More room on the right side of the plane. IFE doesn't do it for me.

The fleet plan released back at the beginning of the year said 36 (!) only remaining at year end.

On what metric?

Three of those (the N94##x) ones are China-built ex-TWA birds.
