2017 Program Year Elite Status Buyback / Renew / Boost (as of 16 Nov 2016)

For the 2018 AAdvantage program year thread, see 2018 Program Year Elite Status Buy back / Buyback / Renew / Boost (master thd) .

"Grace" for those close to completing status requirements has not been offered since AA began the buyback / renew / boost program.

In previous years, AA (and US) have offered those who failed to requalify for elite status the opportunity to buy back or "boost" status for the following status year. That offer is extended for the 2017 programme year, and is be discussed here. E-mails have gone out to many members (16 Nov) with tailored offers.

Complied a list of people's offers here. List is current up to post #51

I'm interested... has anyone here actually paid the buyback?

I do wonder whether this is just a scheme to get people traveling more on AA, rather than a scheme that people actually pay for.

It seems like in most cases you can do a MR from 90k for much less than the amount asked.

Offer of Platinum for $699

I have 8 more EQS booked this year so I will qualify by travel.

FTers know that. Many don't. Some don't have time for MRs. And some don't care - more money than brains.

Sitting at 96,184k EQM. Flying LHR-ORD tomorrow, which will put me at EXP. Got an offer to boost to EXP for $1,299. Needless to say, I'll pass. :P

Boost to AAdvantage® Executive Platinum status for $1,299
AAdvantage® Executive Platinum You’re so close to reaching American Airlines AAdvantage® Executive Platinum status. Here’s a limited-time opportunity to step up to that level for $1,299.

You’ll enjoy better benefits like upgrades, free checked bags and much more. See all the benefits »

Act now and your status will start within 5 business days. Plus, you’ll enjoy status through January 2018.
Edit: I have 54 EQS, and I added my own data point to the chart in the wiki.

I am at 96+K EQM's right now with about 6K EQM's reserved and ticketed before end of year. My emailed offer was to extend for $1299. Am I missing something? Perhaps AA thinks some folks will do this even if they don't need to.

I think the point is that sometimes things change. Just because you have booked travel through the end of the year doesn't mean you'll fly it.

But my money's on AA just looking at how many EQM/Segments you have whenever they decide to make the offer and not paying attention to future travel bookings.

I'm at 102,379 for this year and got the $1,299 offer today. I only got over the 100K mark on Monday afternoon, so maybe they pulled their list of "nearly there" folks then.

What doesn't make sense is that the Monday afternoon flight was the second segment of a SYD-LAX-PHL itinerary that, all of which was counted for double EQM. The $1,299 offer had to have been made after the SYD-LAX points were awarded but before the LAX-PHL points were. Odd.

I'm at 96,000 eqms and just received the $1799 buy-up offer. They clearly don't look at upcoming trips, as I have about 12k eqms booked over the next few weeks. That said, the pricing seems crazy to me. Anyone getting to 96k must know that they can buy 4K worth of eqm flights for much less (even if you do have to actually fly them). I'd think a sliding scale that gets cheaper the fewer eqms you need (and jumps to be expensive when you're so close to the end of the year that you're unlikely to want to make a MR) when ups be far more likely to bring in extra revenue.

I'm at 49200~ EQM and they gave me a $799 offer. I'm taking a flight from LAX-LAS RT for $80 to hit the required mileage, so no thanks to the $800

At 15k EQM, no status, got a 499$ offer to boost to Gold. Only a couple flights scheduled for the rest of the year, and they will only net about 3k extra EQM.

Side note: I tried looking for a "Is Gold status worth it?" thread but didn't find one. I'm new to the forum so any help would be appreciated! Thanks. If it helps, I am a UA Silver, based in a spoke city.

I am a multi year exp. This year only 75k eqm's so far with a month and a half left. Have not received any offers (I did last year when I was already over 100k) to keep EXP. I just did the Delta medallion challenge and am seriously thinking of making the jump. Upgrades are disappearing even for EXPs and the changes in the program to go to $ based sucks. I fly lots of miles but am frugal and work for a frugal company.

I'm not entirely sure what I'm being asked to pay for? Free checked bags? EC seats? That's about it anymore.

I'm dropping from Plat to Gold in 2017 because AA gutted Plat. I'd say that Gold offers some benefits that can be worth going out of the way to get, and EXP has a lot of benefits that are worth going out of the way to get. Platinum is the red-headed stepchild...not worth going out of your way to get.
