And we also seem to be finding more cases where award miles are still based on miles. AAVacations is one, and preliminary reports seem to indicate that purchasing flights with TYPs is another.

Pure speculation on my part, but maybe those are opaque fares where the exact fare breakdown isn't encoded in the ticket?

Some interesting info in this recent interview: https://skift.com/2018/02/12/america...-long-flights/

Interesting article read. One curious tidbit is the "rule" that airlines don't reuse flight numbers after there has been a crash. Usually true - but odd in the case of AA 1 which crashed in 1962.

Nowadays AA mainline flight numbers go up to 2754.

Long haul international out of the ex-US hubs seem to be 7XX flight numbers.

The Latest I can find is AA Mainline is 1-3334 & 6020-6184, 3335-4334 Envoy, 4335-4809 - Republic, 4810-5014, 6185-6539 Skywest, 5015-5679 PSA. 5680-6019 - Piedmont, 6450-6599 AA buses.
All international on Widebodys (Excluding Mexico, Canda and Caribean) are 1-999, but there are also lots of single isle aircraft on domestic routs 1-999 too. Most of the domestic 1 and 2 digit flight numbers are between JFK, LAX, DFW, ORD cities. I think the single biggest reason for the limitations and or changes is dispatch purposes not really anything more, maybe a little of marketing and or historical in a few cases too. |
There are some interesting legacy/historical flight numbers in use. Many of the AA7xx transatlantic flights from PHL are carryover US Airways flight numbers (e..g, AA714/715 PHL-VCE vv. was originally US714/715 PHL-VCE vv.). Similarly, AA50/51 DFW-LON vv., AA80/81 DFW-LON, AA60/61 NRT-DFW vv., AA70/71 DFW-FRA vv., AA44/45 JFK-PAR vv., AA100/101 JFK-LHR vv., all have been in use for a very long time.

Oh my, I didn't realize mainline was using 6020-6184. I feel like they should have instead kept creeping up the 3xxx and redistribute the regionals as needed.
