What happens to an unused award?

What happens to an award that is ticketed, then neither used nor redeposited? Does the award ticket remain available to be rebooked on a later date? If so, does the original flight have to be canceled before departure, or by some other deadline?

Essentially, is it feasible to book last minute award space for a departure in the next few days, not travel, then use the ticket later during its 1-year validity when space opens up on a desirable travel date?

Thanks for your help!

That thread doesn't seem to have anything to do with what the OP is asking. The redeposit aspect of that thread is whether you need to redeposit and rebook based on award changes. The OP is asking if they don't know when they want to travel, can they not show up for the flight and then change the dates later.

My understanding is that if you have a flight like that that's round trip, AA will cancel the return if you don't fly the outbound.

So that should suggest to you that they'll cancel everything if you don't show up at all.

The proper procedure is to always change the date before the date of departure. If you have to change the date a few times as a result (each time only moving it forward a few months), so be it.
