Interesting!

Gary says AA has confirmed the LAX-HKG start/date, but denies Osaka.

I wonder when the official announcement is coming. Must have resolved that pesky slot issue.

Departure Time?

Anyone have an idea what the departure time will be for LAX-HKG?

Subtract the flight time LAX-HKG from the departure time of HKG-DFW on a 12 hour clock, add turn time, and then convert to Pacific time and I think you'll be mighty close to the answer.

Assuming a approximate 14 hour flight, and a 3 hour turn (probably too short) I get around 11am LAX departure. That would put it leaving at the same time as the late morning CX885 departure.

Nope, will be much more complicated (and incredibly efficient!) than that, involving several different 77Ws.

My guess:
LAX-HKG: departs LAX at midnight and arrives HKG around 6am. This 77W would then fly HKG-DFW.

HKG-LAX: departs HKG around 9pm (using the 77W that arrives from DFW) and arrives LAX around 7:15pm). Connections at LAX would be limited to the west coast; passengers traveling to the central and eastern time zones would be better off taking the HKG-DFW flight.

What about eastbound red-eyes? I'm thinking places like PHL, WAS, CLT, TPA, ORD, NYC, MCO, MIA, ATL, maybe even BOS. Those might be some torturous red-eyes, but they can add feed for the flight. Depending on timing, GRU could also work.

Well, I suppose coach passengers might be relatively indifferent about connecting in LAX to a domestic redeye (vs. going via DFW or ORD/JFK/BOS on CX), but I can't imagine any premium pax would want to do that! (Though to be fair, 8-10 years ago, I did HKG-LAX-JFK on CX/AA in J a couple of times (double red-eye), as there was no other late-night option from HKG, and it was the most time-efficient way back to NYC, though at least there was a semi-decent recliner on the domestic leg.)

I really hope that the westbound flight in an overnight. Not a big fan of long haul daytime flights. Less of a factor with inflight internet but I'd still rather sleep the flight away.

I believe there's a bank of 9-10pm bank of departures to all the big/medium size West Coast cities - LAS, SFO, PHX, FAT, etc.

Hi -

If the flight arrived at 700PM +/-, there are a lot of west coast connections on AS.

With so many existing CX flights, why not fly to HKG out of PHX? or CLT? or MIA? or ORD (a morning flight to complement CX's afternoon)?
