DFW-HKG why not midnight departure?

Currently, DFW-HKG leaves around noon and gets into HKG around 7pm and then doesn't leave HKG until 1:40pm the next day.

Why doesn't AA schedule DFW-HKG to leave around midnight, which would give connecting pax all day to get to DFW and that would mean arriving in HKG around 630am? And then, anyone with onwards connections on CX can then catch connections easily.

For the DFW pax, it would mean having a full business day, being able to eat dinner, and then make their way to DFW to fly and then land at HKG early in the morning with a full day in HKG ahead of them.

Maybe a few west coast pax would connect to this flight, but I think most would just take the CX nonstops?

Furthermore, wouldn't a midnight departure and morning arrival into HKG allow for a much shorter turn in HKG for the aircraft?

The problem is on the HK side. Slots are extremely hard to come by these days at HKIA, particularly morning arrival into HKG. Most of the European, Australian, and North American flights come in between the hours of 05:00 to 08:00

In this case, it's the decision of HKSAR Aeronautical Information Service that all airlines must comply to the slot clearance within the specific airport - HKG. No airlines can operate or plan to operate at different allocated slot times agreed before slot assignments.

Almost no other competing airlines can negotiate for the early arrival time slots. You can look at BA, LH, QF, SA, KL, AF. The decision is made mainly to maintain the competitive balance that the home airport carrier to maximize the revenue and convenience for flights in and out of HKG.

However, your argument is not valid for DFW-HKG, because HKG is the OneWorld hub, so any DFW-HKG connecting passengers will be able to make the connection with OneWorld feeding flights. You can even get to Europe/South Africa/Australia with such flights.

Not too difficult to understand. Just like in NRT/HND, you will not see overnight flights or any other arrival slots for UA/AA/DL other than 2-6p.m. local time(NRT), and late evening(HND)

Slot times is what is holding up AA from announcing LAX-HKG. The rotation is likely to be DFW-HKG-LAX-HKG-DFW, requiring three aircraft. The three aircraft rotation would force AA to operate one of the HKG flights during the night with a midnight departure, early morning arrival. Due to connections from Deep South America, I believe DFW-HKG-DFW's timings are going to remain roughly the same but LAX-HKG-LAX is planned to be the night time flight. I believe AA operating LAX-HKG-LAX during the times they anticipate operating the route will be the first time a US carrier will operate flights to and from HKG during the night rather than the current daytime flights, where the aircraft RON at HKG, except for UA's ORD-HKG-SIN, where the RON occurs at SIN.
