This is perhaps a silly thought but is there anyplace within AA that you could send a letter suggesting that they change their policy about upgrading and about the companion tickets earning miles?

Honestly, the fact that the companion pass doesn't earn miles becomes moot in the second half of the year when American moves to earning miles based on the purchase price of the fare since you would earn either (495 miles as a regular Aadvantage member, 693 miles as a Silver member, 792 miles as a platinum member, and 1089 miles as an Executive Platinum member). This is probably why they included this language since the earnings capability would be negligible at best to begin with.

On the other hand, the fact that you aren't able to use stickers for upgrades is disappointing and doesn't seem to make a lot of sense but I am guessing that American is looking at it that you are buying a fare well below cost so therefore you shouldn't be entitled to an upgrade since someone who paid regular price might want the upgrade.

My concern was earning elite miles when flying on one of the $99 companion tickets. I assume that we earn miles for the $250 or more ticket though. With respect to the stickers, I do not find them that successful to begin with. I was thinking miles plus co-pay to upgrade.

I assume that booking through a travel agent, even if they use Sabre, isn't possible, correct?

I'd love to do it on a business trip but I have to use my corporate travel agent.

I am traveling with my family next week using the companion cert. I'm using my AA number and I expect to earn miles for the trip. For my wife (companion #1), I entered her AS number, and for my son (comp #2), I entered his AA number.

I'll report back as to whether or not either/both of them earned miles for the trip.

Did it let you put in upgrade requests in your reservation?

My anniversary date was January 10 and I am still waiting for my devalued certificate to come. The longer it takes, the smaller your window is to book a ticket. I called Barclays and inquired about when I would need to book the ticket by given my anniversary date. The person had no clue but told my the rewards department would know. I asked for the number and that person proceeded to give me an American Airlines number. I recognized the number (I had been through this drill from Barclays before) and told him that this information is something Barclays would know and not AA.

Honestly, I didn't try. There's three of us so complimentary upgrades are out. I didn't want to burn my SWUs as we have some Europe travel planned for later in the year.

My gut feeling is that it wouldn't have worked anyway as they would need to send it to ticketing where they would see the base fares for the companions.

You should be able to get the certificate from the Barclays website when logged into your account. I was able to get mine that way about a month before I received it in the mail.

After logging in, navigate to 'View Rewards'->'View My Rewards Activity', then scroll down. There is a meter showing your progress towards companion certs and the EQM bonuses. I had a link to download my certificate there.

I got my certificate notification email today (I haven't been able to check my paper mail for a whiel, so it might be there too). My account anniversary was in mid December, so that's quite some time after.

I've got good news! I can confirm that indeed I did earn miles for the outbound flight, as expected. But even better - the miles for the flight posted to my son's AA account! And to top it all off, the miles posted to my wife's AS account as well (after a few days).

So it seems that the language regarding companions not earning miles for travel aren't being enforced (or more likely they don't have the ability to distinguish between the primary passenger and the companion).

For the miles earned for the companion's accounts, did they also earn EQM's? Or just RDM's?

I converted in December from Red to Silver, and got this instead of a $100 off cert.

I would have rather had the $100 off. Can't use this on business due to corp travel agent requirement at work, can't use this for any flight over 90 minutes because I can't upgrade my wife.

Alas, this seems essentially consistent with what I just heard from a Barclays CSR... that the interpretation of the T&C is 45 days after anniversary date (to make sure you pay the AF, I assume...?) and then 6-8 weeks to issue/send. I make that 12.5 to 14.5 weeks from the anniversary date. If you got it on 3 March, and assuming your anniversary date was 15 December, this was "only" 10 weeks!

Sheesh, talk about an annoyance.

Among the other things that strike me as nonsensical is that right up to your anniversary date, the Rewards page is showing your progress, then that you qualified, and then a date that was approximately (in my case) 45 days after anniversary date. However, once the new qualification year has started, all this info seems to have disappeared -- at least it has in my case -- which seems strange for a benefit that will not come for another 12.5 to 14.5 weeks (or maybe 10!)
