Welcome to the 2016 "NEWBIE LOUNGE"
Ask Your Consolidated / Combined AA Questions Here (flame free)
MODERATOR GUIDEPOST:
(This post can only be edited by moderators.)

Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

NOTE: This is a "flame free" thread; flaming, personal criticism for "failing to search" etc. is not allowed (if posted, the post will be summarily deleted, the poster subject to sanctions).

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.

Don't hesitate to contact a moderator or another member if you have any additional questions. You can PM the Moderators by clicking on , which pops up a message box; the message goes to all this forum's Moderators. Note that unlike some sites with paid staff moderators, FlyerTalk Moderators are volunteers, and most work, travel, go on holiday, etc. You can Private Message us using the PM system (My Flyertalk) and our handles.

We're glad you've chosen to join the Flyertalk frequent flyer community!

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:

Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:

Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

FlyerTalk Rules (We all agree to abide by these, and are held accountable.)[/LIST]
NOTE: The older AA NEWBIE LOUNGE post thread is here

777 and 772

So I realize that LHR-JFK routes are on the newly refurbished 777s but does anyone know when they will start using 772s for the Asia routes? For example, I see that 777 is still being used on DFW-NRT route (although ORD-NRT seems to be on a 787 now) deep into the middle of this year.

There is a thread (or two) on that.

The problem is that AA has 47 777-223ERs, and seven are converted. And the seat AA "designed" (a dumbed down version of the OEM seat) became enough of a problem for Zodiac they got way behind. 787s parked in the desert, rather than producing revenue; 777s not getting their seats. AA cancelled the Zodiac contract, and at least AFAIK they have not signed ink with a new supplier.

Short version: it's gonna be a while.

I'm glad no question is too stupid here I've accumulated a fair number of AAdvantage miles, but I'm about to redeem them for the first time. I've found some fares for a trip I'm going to take where I can get >$0.02/mile, so digging into my stash is the clear right option. But I haven't done this before so I figured I would bring my questions here!

I'm still coordinating the exact arrival and departure dates with some friends (who will be travelling separately), but I've found a few possible itineraries at the minimum 25k miles (it's a domestic flight), for our two most viable options, Fri-Weds and Sat-Weds. Friday has two departures while Saturday has four, so I figured I'd put a hold on the Fri-Weds itinerary while I wait for our plans to solidify. If we decide to leave on Saturday instead, can I change the hold (i.e., keep the Weds departure I've held) as long as the Saturday awards are still available?

Another question: I've got a Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select card, brand new in fact. Would I get the free checked bag/Group 1 boarding benefits if I use the card to pay the ~$10 in fees?

Thanks in advance for dealing with my silly questions!

Flying AA biz HKG-DFW in a week, no OW Elite Status, excited about checking out lounges in HKG Airport especially Cathay's lounges, which lounges will I have access to as a biz passenger and which one should definitely visit for a great experience. Thanks.

You should be able to change the held reservation, as long there is still space on the Sat flight. You will likely have to call in to make this change, and if I am not mistaken, this shouldn't affect your ability to ticket online and avoid the telephone fee. Another thing you could do is hold the Fri flight, hold the Sat flight, and hold the Wed flight in three separate reservations, and end up ticketing two of them. This ensures the Sat flight doesn't disappear, but you'll have 2 PNRs, which could cost you more if you wanted to make some changes and/or cancel.

I think the nicest CX business lounge is The Bridge. I also like the noodle bar in The Wing. If it is open, I'd also visit the Qantas lounge.

Thanks for the information. That's a big bummer

I'd second the noodle bar in The Wing. My last 2 trips to HK have been on Cathay, and The Wing is extremely convenient for gates 1-4. Returning from HKG on AA in 2 weeks, and look forward to trying The Bridge or The Pier. Though I may hit the noodle bar based upon reviews of AA meals (OK, but hardly CX).

I have 2 questions...

1. Etihad - I read all details on AA website and my understanding is that we can earn AA miles by flying Etihad, but those miles might not be elite qualifying? It is true? On Etihad earning page of AA website, there is no such indication at all about EQM... If those miles are elite qualifying, then it seems only Etihad will earn you 100% miles even if we fly the cheapest fare class? This is the link I looked at: http://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/ea...nes/etihad.jsp
Please be noted that I am talking about booking a flight on Etihad directly (not AA code shared flights)...

2. Award booking - I wonder whether we can use SWU on award booking with AA? For example, if I have an award booking from Munich to SFO with AA, can I apply one SWU to this booking? Or SWU can only be applied to cash bookings?

Thanks for the answer!

hey guys quick question - i earned 9232 EQM between august-december 2015 and earned another 4000-something the other day. however, on my account, the 9232 miles that i earned last year are now gone and my elite qualifying status to progress to gold only says 4130. i was wondering if there could be a mistake (because 1 year technically hasn't fully passed yet) or if whether the EQM really do expire after the day of the new year.

At 12.01am PST 01.01.2016 all accounts EQM and EQS are zeroed out and any flying done after that hour is considered for the new year 2016 not for the previous one 2015.

It seems that your flying activity is done (flight departure time) after that cut hour resulting in being posted for traveling 2016.

Correct, and it all must be before 12 midnight Dec 31 2016. Then your status will be valid until through Feb 28, 2018.
