Have to admit I've been guilty of this.
Not because I assume anyone is not in first, but if they are standing 15 feet from the front of the priority boarding lane I don't always extend the courtesy of standing behind them...especially when there are 100 people crowded into the boarding area and/or I have a bulkhead seat in first. If you're standing in the wrong place, and not a typical 1st class flyer (e.g. I rarely see families in 1st) I may cut in front of you. But if you call me on it and say you're in first I'll be apologetic and polite (but I may still ask you to move up so the rest of us have somewhere to stand). :) |
Too many people are judging these days regardless if it is GA or other pax. One reason why I try not to fly commercial when I don't need to, don't need to be around negative people.
|
I travel in suit sometimes other times jeans and a nice tee shirt. Never noticed a difference. However, I always make sure I am well groomed and neat. No flip flops, tank tops, torn clothes, etc. Proper demeanor and manners. I've seen my fill of morons in suits, usually thinking the world is their subordinate. GAs can make the boarding process easier by making a professional yet stern announcement about the boarding process beforehand. Most seem not to and as a result it becomes a free for all, frustrating particularly Priority Paxs and GAs alike.

i happened to be 1st in line after 1st class boarded last week for a CLT-STL flight after the agent called explt/plt etc to board I walked up - in the priority lane - and just as I was handing my BP to the GA a older guy zoomed up in the other lane and almost broke my arm handing his BP to the GA, he was in 1st, he boarded she looked at me and said "There is one in every crowd" I LOL'ed.
This has nothing to do with the thread but on my return the RJ did not allow normal carry-ons in the overhead bins so they were all checked 1st got yellow and everyone else red. I assumed this would mean 1st class would have their luggage loaded last therefore off 1st, guess not our bags were last off. Sort off annoying when your connecting flight is tight and your bag comes off last. |

The more regular flyer I became, the less extra time I wanted to spend on the plane (certainly, at least, at the gate).

Totally agree on the gate being the last place I want to spend a minute extra.

On a recent flight from PHL to BOS, some guy just parked himself in the priority lane and crouched down (squat style) conducting Very Important Business loudly on his phone to assure first on. It was very weird and he hung out there for a good 20 minutes prior to boarding.

Huh? Just say excuse me and walk to the front, they'll tell you if they are going there too.

Never been asked by AA GAs but I did get that question occasionally from BA agents. I guess the BA crew are trained to be more judgmental. :D
In these situations, I have always just gave them my boarding pass without uttering a word. Why waste your breath? |
RANT: "Are you priority?"
I don't mind it honestly because I'm in my early 30's and fly J/F for work. When I travel, I (like many have said) where jeans and often a hoody to be comfortable. I'd prefer they ask and then I know they're just not letting everyone on.
I get more annoyed as some have said about the crowded around the podium that seems to have gotten worse. My wife and I tend to fly coach more often when we're paying (more distance for your buck!) and I dress the same and wait courteously off to the side until those with status are called. It's a respect thing that people need to understand...you either paid more for your seat or you're spending your life flying, either way you're up front and should be able to board first. One thing I do hate is that given PFB are rarer I like to board last even when in J but so often my overhead luggage won't have a spot. If we're all having fun ranting here, I'd like a FA to watch as the girl in 27D shoves her bag into 3D's overhead space... Oh man, we at FT love these topics!! If I wasn't typing on my iPhone I could go on for days!! |
Never by a GA but I get this frequently in the priority check in line at DCA. I am young minority, so I guess I am unfortunately use to it. Just 2 months ago at DCA, 3 people were ahead of me in the priority line and as soon as I got to the front, agent looked at me then said "Sir, this is the first class line, are you flying priority of first class?" I was in a good mood today or I would check her as she did not ask the middle age white people she checked in before me.
There was a roaming agent at DCA (US Airways) earlier this year that asked me where I was traveling to and pointed me to the self service machines which was crowded as I attempted to enter the empty priority lane. I had to inform him I was flying first. This is not just AA, I had a similar experience on TG in Phuket. After standing in a long line for business check in, I got to the front and the agent call me over and said "this is business class check in only" No questions asked, so I did get in my feelings here. I dress fairly decent but I am told I look really young (college age). Being a minority I guess is icing on the cake for discrimination. |

Happens all the time with the 50-60 year old male WASPs in suits. They seem to always push ahead to get to the front of the line, almost always past me. I always love their reaction to me sitting down next to them. I am almost always in jeans or shorts and a tshirt. I like to travel comfy. I'll change when I get to where I am going.
I have more than once made the comment that one doesnt have to be a monkey in a suit to be important. That usually gets them to shut up. As far as people pushing past you at the gate, I won't hesitate to say something to the person. It's shocking how many people will do things like walk up through the main lane when there's clearly a line of people in the priority lane, thinking they're smarter, faster, and more important than everyone else:rolleyes: |

Too bad. Cheers. |
Having flown commercial for over 50 years I've seen dress standards take a precipitous dive in the front cabin, as have service standards. The only improvements have been the seats themselves, but that's another matter. I can well understand why airline staff often have the attitude they do towards some passengers who have a more relaxed attitude to their attire...and are able to flaunt it given their platinum and black cards. However, what has happened in the front cabins of airplanes is only a broader reflection of what's happened in society generally. One just gets used to seeing just about anything on an airplane these days. To each his or her own as long as it doesn't frighten the horses. I can only commiserate with airline staff who smile and bear it. All I have to add is, if you dress like someone who doesn't care how they present themselves in public, you're going to occasionally get the reaction(s) you do...so grow up and accept the response to your "rebellion"!
