Joining a segment to avoid a stopover possible?

Bought a cheap fare, as in very cheap on kayak for TPE-NRT-LAX-ORD one way..

is it possible to avoid the LAX hop and have a gate agent change NRT->LAX->ORD to simply NRT-ORD? at Narita?

Highly unlikely that such a change would be made for free.

I shudder to think what the change might cost in terms of change fee plus re-fare.

No such thing as standby on international itineraries such as yours.

Only by getting it reticketed by reservations

AA might do it if they need the OP's seat on the NRT-LAX flight.

Yep - best hope NRT-LAX is oversold.
