Boeing 787-9 (789): Discussion of 787-9 AA as of 6 Oct 2016

22 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners were ordered in total by American Airlines.

Related threads:

Boeing 787-9 / 789: Best Business (B/E Super Diamond) Seat, Service (master thd)

Boeing 787-9 / 789: Coach, MCE & Premium Economy Seat, Service (master thd)

Retaining the wingspan of the 787-8, the 787-9 is a lengthened and strengthened variant with a 20 feet (6.1 m) longer fuselage and a 54,500 pounds (24,700 kg) higher maximum take-off weight (MTOW), seating 280 passengers in a typical three-class arrangement over a 7,635 nautical miles (8,786 mi; 14,140 km) range. Link to Wikipedia article.
Seating in the 787-9 "out of the box" will comprise
  1. 30 Business class seats

  2. 21 Premium Economy seats

  3. 234 economy seats (207 Main Cabin, 27 Main Cabin Extra)
...we learned that American would be installing the B/E Aerospace Super Diamond seat on their (~half the 772 fleet) 777-200, A350, and 787 aircraft going forward. These are the same types of business class seats as on Air Canada, China Airlines, Qatar Airways, Virgin Australia, etc. (EXCEPT the AA seats will not offer privacy dividers for the Center pair of seats) Link to One Mile at a Time article
B/E Aerospace will provide the Premium Economy seating (possibly a version of their Millennium seat); extendable leg and footrests for bulkhead seats, foot pegs for the rest.

AA will receive an additional 10 787-9s in 2017 and will receive the final 8 in 2018. AA has ordered a total of 22 787-9s to complement its 20 787-8s. These will have the General Electric GEnx-1B engines.

Its actually going to be a while before these aircraft really start to show up en masse as AA is taking its final three 787-8s in February and March. It won't be until next summer where they'll be plenty of these aircraft flying around the system.

Thanks for the insight! Glad to hear it's doing OK otherwise. ^

Does the loss of 77w lax-Sydney mean anything for lax-Mia 77w?

Probably gone since there's no morning arrival ex-LAX for the AA1088 turn, unless they are running a 77W ex-MIA (now I am just hoping that they'll at least have a 772 for LAX-MIA and not all 32Bs).

Well there's the end of any interest I have in using AA for transcons out of South Florida. Mint it is.

As discussed in the other thread, both EF and AA.com show the 77W returning on 11/5. I'm thinking it's a one week break due to planned maintenance for some 77W frames.

You can actually request AA to put you on another flight for free if the new aircraft type is different (no lie flat in your case), I have done it successfully last year on the exact same route, for exact same reason,

During the call I had to help the agent to navigate in the condition of carriage on AA website to have it approved (agent wasn't aware of that rule), good luck!

Any chance to get an up-gauge to a 789 or 772 for PVG in the months to come? LAX/ORD/DFW are all served by 788

AA cancelled my 8 p.m. DEN-LAX the day before Thanksgiving so I did a free schedule change and picked DEN-DFW-LAX with AA2489 DFW-LAX on the 787-9, seat 3L. I was more interested in keeping the same arrival time as I'm picking up someone in LAX, so I'm pleased with how it worked out. Assuming that aircraft goes on to SYD.

Anyone know of TATL 789 routes operating next August? All the routes in the wiki appear to be 788's or 772's when checking on ExpertFlyer.

I thought I wrote this here but it may have been elsewhere. The 787-9s flying DFW-CDG/MAD and ORD-CDG were merely temporary as so few 787-9s were in the fleet at the time. The 787-9 is going to LAX-NRT/HND/PEK/PVG/SYD/GRU, along with seasonal LAX-AKL, and DFW-ICN/PVG. This is as of March 25, 2018. The 787-9 was primarily designed for routes like these, as AA now has the opportunity to not only expand in the Pacific but make money. Notice the 772s, with the exception of double daily DFW-NRT, which likely is profitable on its own, have vanished from Pacific flying. Tells you all you need to know how AA was performing on Trans-Pacs. Once the 787-9 order is complete in Q1 2019, I would not be surprised if the 787-9 replaces the 772s on DFW-NRT. DFW/LAX-HKG will very likely stay 77Ws due to being the only aircraft with International F, I note Doug's comments on DFW-HKG usually selling out F, and the large J cabin, something that isn't present on the 787-9s.

I was hoping they might be shifting them to another TATL but figured it was more likely they wouldn't be seen on any moving forward. Thank you for the insight!
