The current thread is here.
Check-in times as of March 2016 Link

In most locations, you must be checked in:

At least 45 minutes before scheduled departure, for flights within the United States

At least 60 minutes before scheduled departure, for flights to or from airports outside of the United States

If you’re beginning travel from any of the airports below, the check-in time is longer:

Departing from: Check-in must be completed by:
(minutes before scheduled departure time)
  • Caracas, Venezuela (CCS) 90 minutes
  • Dublin, Ireland (DUB) 75 minutes
  • Buenos Aires, Argentina (EZE) 75 minutes
  • Maracaibo, Venezuela (MAR) 90 minutes
  • St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (STT) 90 minutes

Peculiarities: MIA can be affected by summer tropical storms and hurricanes. Knock-on effects during lengthy IROPS can manifest themselves systemwide. At peak times (e.g. early morning arrivals), arrivals processing and terminal facilities can get very crowded.

Special notice

We operate out of Concourses D and E. Check your flight status for gate information.

Official MCT / Minimum Connection Times for MIA (assuming same terminal):
  • 0:40 Domestic to Domestic
  • 0:45 Domestic to International
  • 1:35 International to Domestic
  • 1:35 International to International
NOTE: Though 1:35 is the given MCT International to Domestic (and 1:35 international to international), one should not consider that useful for everyone connecting international to domestic unless one has Global Entry or luck.

International arrivals at MIA requires most passengers to fill out a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Declaration Form 6059B - one per family - process U.S. Immigration, retrieve baggage at arrivals carousels, process through U.S. customs, re-check baggage, proceed to either the TSA connections security processing queue or landside and process TSA security (with onward boarding pass) to return airside. (Read on for exceptions.)

This does not apply if you are connecting international to international and have red "ITI" tags on your checked baggage. You will have to produce the Form 6059B and still pass through USCBP, albeit without baggage.

Other than for U.S. passport holders and passengers with USDHS ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization under the Visa Waiver Program), who may use kiosks that expedite the arrivals process, Immigration, Customs and TSA Security queues can at times be tortuous and one would do better scheduling a connection time closer to 2:30 (or even 3:00) for a comfortable international to domestic or to international connection for non-ESTA / non-U.S. passport holders.

If one is enrolled in Global Entry and can use the dedicated kiosks and expedited queues, the process is speediest as there are clearly marked queues after the self-clearing kiosks and one is not required to possess a Form 6059B.

Things to Do

Is there anything to do at MIA? Coming soon!

Do I have time to go to Miami or Miami Beach?
Downtown Miami Due to increased security checkpoint wait times, you should allow yourself at least 3 hours between connections if you do not have Priority or Pre✓. A taxi to the city center should take approximately 12-17 minutes and will cost approximately $22. Because traffic to and from the airport can be unpredictable, consider taking the Metrorail Orange Line in lieu of a taxi. It is a 15-minute ride from the airport to the city center and trains run every 10-15 minutes except late nights. A roundtrip is $4.50.

Miami Beach Allow at least 3½ hours between connections due to the possibility of heavy traffic on the highways between the beach and the mainland. A taxi to the beach should take approximately 22-27 minutes and will cost $35 (flat rate) if going south of 63rd Street. For reference, South Beach and most of the tourist spots are south of 23rd Street. Consider taking the 150 Miami Beach Airport Express bus from the airport to the beach. It is a 31-minute ride from the airport to the Lincoln Road Mall and buses run every 20 minutes. A roundtrip is $4.50.

Yes we were were admitted to the Flagship Lounge and escorted from the lounge check-in desk personally to the lift and through the lounge to the Private Dining area to be handed over to the host there. It was about 2pm and there were only a couple of others dining. There was a full menu and lavish wine list and we ate well.

Hey all!

I want to do an Intl AA to Domestic AA connection with a 1 hour 19 minute layover. (Flight isn't sold on AA website or ITA Matrix presumably because it fails MCT). I'm coming in from MEX, in First, have hand luggage only and global entry, and would be connecting around 9pm on Sunday night so I guess 1h19 should work.

Is there a way to force the ticket sale? If I miss the connection due to a delay in the first flight, would I simply be put on the flight the next morning?

Thanks!

Connecting time Miami

Hi, we plan to Travel from Belize City with American Airlines and then connect onward to Germany with Eurowings. We would have three hours between the two flights ( booked separately ). Do You think that will be enough time? Thank you

Welcome to FT. Three hours should be fine assuming your BZE-MIA flight is on time. Just keep in mind you will have to claim your luggage at MIA, clear customs, then make your way (with your luggage) to Terminal C (?) to check-in for your Eurowings flight.

I think your potential issue is that you booked them separately. Under ideal situation where schedule is not impacted, you should have time to claim, clear, and to the connection. However, just be prepared if there are interruptions. If you itinerary is booked on the same airline or on the same itinerary with different carrier (ie partner), you may have a little bit more recourse when you miss your connection flight due to delay.

I do not believe it is possible. I believe INT-DOM MCT 90 minutes, so they will not sell you a 1:19 connection. If you were to book two separate tickets and misconnect, you are on your own.

Is it doable without any delays and GE and hand luggage and everything lining up? Yes.
Would I do it on two separate tickets? No way.

Leave just a little late, hit a headwind, no gate to park in, a snag at GE, a delay at security or any of 100 other things and you will not make it.

For me, I would not take the risk.

+1. It can be a long trek to go from your arrival gate through immigration and customs and get to your connecting gate at MIA even with no delays.

Just a quick update. I guess I got lucky in that I was flying late yesterday evening, the MLK holiday undoubtedly lowered traffic in the airport. But here are some of my observations - preaching to the choir in most instances I presume. My itinerary was scheduled with a nearly 2 hour connect time. I landed in E satellite which looks so dated as many have noted. The building's solid doors that open/close to the train's doors make everything feel so claustrophobic. The train from E satellite to the final stop was clean and nice and ran back and forth rapidly. One train was not in use. Upon exiting the train, it was unbelievable that there was a SINGLE escalator and it was not wide enough to hold two people on the same step. There is a small elevator as well. A real bottleneck formed at the top of the escalator. At the base of the escalator is signage that points to PASSPORT CONTROL with one arrow pointing left - meaning to return to E - and another to D (E and D are indicated). Now, we as frequent travelers know to check these things out, but I feel really sorry for those who get to this decision point land for whom English might be a problem. This being my first time in MIA international arrivals, I even took a second look, but I knew my domestic flight would be from D. After the long trek to D passport control through a very unappealing asylum white painted corridor - also fitted with a SINGLE row moving sidewalk along the way - I was greeted by plenty of Global Entry kiosks. Exiting out I just handed the CBP agent my printed receipt from the kiosk. Some customs facilities ask me to at least flash the passport, but not here. I had no checked luggage so I can't comment, but nearly all posts in this Guide indicate a minimum 30 minute wait. Reading those, it was clear I needed to pack with carry-on only for the return and I did. Thus, I cannot personally comment on wait at baggage claim. I was able to walk straight through baggage claim to the exit (this one was pretty clearly marked) and past a group of CBP agents standing at the doorway. No need to flash pp or interact at all. NOW the trek to security required for entry in to the D gate area. Again, I was lucky in that this was a holiday, and lines were non-existent, so I went right through - btw TSA pre-check WAS open. Had I chosen to check luggage on this particular itinerary, the re-check would have been a breeze - again holiday! I exited out somewhere in the D-teen gates (correct me if I am wrong). It was not convenient for the Flagship lounge at D30 however, and I wasted time checking on locating that.

Now, general comments on D. My outbound, a few days earlier, was fine as I was AA metal all the way domestic to international in the D terminal. I had arrived in the D60s used by commuter jets and the train was convenient for moving to the D20s and to the Flagship lounge which is very nice. I had checked a bag on the outbound. I would say unless you are moving from one end of concourse D to the other, the location of the train stations coupled with the need to take a few escalators up to the train makes it a trade off as to whether to just walk. I know all of D was not originally built together with the train and location of things like the Admirals club and future traffic growth in mind, but the resulting retrofit is not very useful. D itself is not very wide and making one's way through it encounters spillover from those waiting at various gates. Most of my AA connections have been thru DFW which I now appreciate more than I could have ever imagined.

It is really too bad that clearly so much money has been spent on something with a poor outcome like D and D/E. I will try my best to avoid MIA in the future and now dub it "JFK-South Terminal."

So, given the low traffic and with no dawdling, I was on the flight at D60 15 mins before departure. I don't think this would have been the case on a "normal" day. I would say 3 hours between an international arrival and domestic departure would be more realistic especially in the case of an E arrival on the international segment.

AA 4432 (MSY) & 8988 (HEL) connect in MIA - will I need to go through security @ MIA?

I'll be taking these legs in a few weeks, and with the shutdown, I am concerned that I may have to go through security in MIA. It seems that for every flight I've taken that has a connection in the USA coming from a USA airport, I have not had to go through security. I had a connection nightmare in MIA a few years ago, but that was coming from Europe.

You do not have to go through security on a domestic to international connection at MIA.

I was going to chime in that the trek from D to E is much, much longer on the air side, but I just measured it on Google Maps and the difference is not that great - about 760 meters vs. 510 meters to get to gate E2. Still, in my experience you are always better off entering through E security when flying out of E gates.

At MIA, do you have to use the normal security line if you are eligible for Flagship check-in but don’t have TSA pre-check?

Apologies for asking on two different threads, but I think this may be more appropriate.

Do you have to have precheck to clear security via Flagship check-in?

No, Precheck is not required to use FS checkin. The host will escort you to the head of either line (precheck or non-precheck).
