Was that proactively offered at check-in, or did you call in? That's a good price if you don't have SWUs to use.

Um gonna disagree there. There are definitely times when cheap hotels do the trick (short overnight airport hotels for example). I can sleep at a 4P just as well as a Westin so if it'll save me money, why not?

Actually offered after check-in. Not available on App either. Kept monitoring website and it popped up this morning.

I'm curious if anyone has seen advance C / SWU availability opening on AA72/73 for flights in the next month or so?

I've had EF alerts set for AA82/83 and have seen nothing. Looking at seat maps, AA72/73 seems to have much better availability for my travel window. So I'm about to pull the trigger on purchasing AA73 on inbound to increase my chances. I just set up alerts, curious if I missed any advance availability.

Traveling to AKL at end of this month (April 2017). Thanks.

I had a waitlist that cleared at 14 days, no C availability appeared. Suggest you follow the guide (someone suggested Sunday - Tuesday? as the best days for SWUs), and put a waitlist in.

Alright, pulled the trigger 3 weeks before on SYD-LAX (AA73). Waitlisted.

EF shows:
F2 A0 J7 R7 D7 I7 Y7 B0 H7 K7 M7 L7 G7 V7 S7 N7 Q6 O0 E0

So how many seats are open in J? Looks like about 20 available from seat map.

I feel like I have a good shot?

Wish me luck!

IMO, this is huge and will make finding the elusive J milesaaver seat to/from SYD even harder. Without F and the significant reduction in number of J seats, this just makes miles tickets and upgrades much harder to come by.

Ha, of course, but that's not a good reason to keep excess capacity on a route, at least from AA's perspective.

Agreed.

No one in any way said it was.

Not good news. On my trip to NZ later this month the J availability to AKL was much more limited than SYD, so I routed thru SYD to increase SWU chances.

The upside: while my business can't afford J, we could swing PE. Would be less nervous if PE was my backup plan (if SWU doesn't clear) when compared to coach. Its debatable whether PE would make the connection thru SYD worth it - but on a 16-hour flight, it probably would be.

Is there any way to ensure that I'm waitlisted for an upgrade without calling? I'm trying to upgrade an outbound and return from J to F in a few weeks. Never had a problem with this upgrade before and it always happened in advance.
