General Information
Despite it's size and five terminals, DFW is a fairly easy airport to navigate and connect though. If you have any difficulty, look around for kiosks / booths staffed by volunteer Ambassadors - they can usually be spotted wearing "ten gallon" cowboy hats. They offer maps and terminal guides (which include dining and shopping information).

Peculiarities: DFW can be severely affected by rare winter ice or snow, and summer thunderstorms. Lightning effectively shuts the flight line down. This is AA's prime hub; over 80% of aircraft movements here are AA, so knock-on effects during lengthy OSO / IROPS can manifest themselves systemwide.

Walking between terminals
- Terminals A-C and B-D (international) are connected at the ends by departures level walkways; the people mover belts on these walkways have been out of service at least for years. Estimate at least a five to ten minute walk between A and C, B and D, more if gates are farther from the connector.
- Terminals A and B are connected by overhead walkways (escalator or lift / elevator). This walkway is serviced by working people mover belts, all of which are out of service as of 7/18/19. Courtesy carts use this route by using lifts.
- Terminals C and D (international) are connected by overhead walkways (escalator or lift / elevator). This walkway is serviced by working people mover belts.

Q. If I am making an international to international connection, what is the process?
There is no international transit process in most U.S.A. airports, but (DFW and MIA have a ITI baggage exception for international to international if arriving from some "approved" international origins). Arriving internationally, unless you have been pre-cleared or are excused by meeting ITI requirements as described here, you must proceed through U. S. immigration (there are kiosks and a fast channel for Global Entry approved passengers, and a "green line" for those with no checked bags), recover your baggage from the baggage carousel and proceed through U. S. Customs. There is a "green line" shortcut for passengers traveling only with carry-on baggage (no checked luggage) and there are Global Entry kiosks and a short cut to Global Entry queues.
Upon exiting Customs there is a bag drop facility; drop your checked connecting baggage, exit to the landside arrivals area.
NOTE: if your connection exceeds 11 hours or entails remaining overnight, you will normally be required to take your baggage with you and re-check it within ~four hours of departure.
NOTE: Any liquids in excess of security allowance will have to either be packed in checked baggage or, in the case of duty free purchases at your origin (or in air from other airlines), presented in STEB (Secure, Tamper Evident Bags) with receipts to TSA
Proceed to the kiosks to get boarding passes for your ongoing travel, or check in and re-check your baggage, then proceed through TSA security to airside (see the "DFW Security" section). Your international departure will be from Terminal D, also your international arrival terminal.

Arriving Passengers: After collecting your baggage, follow the Rental Car signs to the designated pick-up area on the lower level of the terminal. From there, board the Rental Car shuttle bus. Buses run 24 hours a day, depart (theoretically) every five minutes and reach the Rental Car Center in approximately 10 minutes.

I got very lucky a month or two ago. I had a scheduled arrival of 12:37 and departure of 1:08, so 31 minutes. (was very nervous booking it, but didn't have other options that day) They were both on RJ. The night before I checked and gate was scheduled to arrive in E and depart from B, so I knew my chances were slim. I packed everything in a duffle bag instead of my normal suitcase so I could squeeze it into the overhead and not have to wait for a gate check. Sometime the morning of the flight they switched the departure and actually ended up flying out on the same plane I landed on, so even had a chance to grab a sandwich to eat.
FAs did the old "We have a number of passengers on tight connections. After we arrive at the gate, if you are not connecting, please remain seated..." It actually kind of worked this time.
To my joy and surprise, my connecting-flight gate was only two over from my arriving one. Still ran, as they were close to closing. When I got there they had given away my MCE seat, but had one more remaining further back. GA had been about to clear a stand-by pax, who now missed the flight. Felt bad for the chap, but hey, I've been on the receiving end of that one too.
Oh, and the last bit of luck is that my seat was a window, not a middle. Young couple with infant wanted aisle-middle.

No. That is the way it was ticketed. It was a cheaper itinerary than the earlier departure out of OGG or the later connecting departure out of DFW to CMH. With almost 9 months before the flights, I'm banking on a schedule change.
P.S. I have done a ~40 minute connection before at DFW. The flights were on time and there was no issue.

Hi all, just looking for some reassurance.
Just booked LAX-LHR via DFW in J on AA for August, for myself and 3 other family members. When I booked this flight, an advisory popped up saying that the layover time in DFW was only 46 minutes.
Assuming the LAX-DFW leg arrives on time, is 46 minutes enough to get where we need to go to catch our DFW-LHR flight?

AA has more than a dozen nonstops daily between LAX and DFW, so you should be able to find one that better fits your schedule if you can't lock in the LAX-LHR direct.
11 hours in the Flagship Lounge with the family sounds like a stretch, but a Priority Pass membership opens lots of free time-killing doors within the airport - video game lounges, small day suites, and massages.
Should you choose to store the luggage and venture out, there are trains available from the airport to the downtowns of both Dallas and Fort Worth, and Ubers and Lyfts are abundant to get you directly to anything you'd like to do (inside, of course, as August will be miserable outdoors). Plenty of restaurants (TX loves its steakhouses and BBQ), museums, malls (NorthPark), and miscellaneous (Punch Bowl Social) around town.

Am flying on QR J to DFW and am planning to book a flight via AA to SLC.
I understand that QR should be able to tag my bag to SLC, even though they are on two separate tickets, as per OneWorld's interline ticketing arrangements. I would have a bag that I'll like to check in - would I need to purchase a checked bag or might I be able to avoid it if QR tags the bags to SLC?
If it's tagged, I'll need to clear immigration and customs at DFW. I presume there's a bag drop for me to drop my bag after I clear customs? If it cannot be tagged from my point of destination, I would need to go to an AA counter to check in? Would there be one at Terminal D? And would an MCT of about 2 hrs 30 mins suffice? Am flying sometime in September.

After some advice please. We have an AA internal flight into DFW later this year. Our connecting AA flight DFW-LHR leaves 1 hour after we’re due to touchdown in DFW.
How much walking and admin etc do we need to do before departing again?

DFW has a train inside security called the Skylink that works its way around all five terminals with two stops in each, with trains making the loop in both directions. Unless you luck out with a short D to D transfer, you’ll likely walk to the nearest Skylink station in your arrival terminal, take the escalator or elevator up, take the Skylink to the closest of the two stations in D to your LHR departure gate, take the escalator or elevator down, and walk to your gate. Your walk from gate to Skylink and a Skylink to gate is not likely to exceed five minutes each.

Thanks! Just to be clear, you're suggesting that I can give not buying checked bag a shot when I purchase my domestic flight, and if I run into issues, make payment then? Also, I presume I'll have sufficient time to make the connection?

1 hour should be plenty of time. But you'll just want to head directly to your departure gate of your LHR flight. While it will most likely depart from D, some internal flights depart from A...so check the gate when you land.
