General Information
Despite it's size and five terminals, DFW is a fairly easy airport to navigate and connect though. If you have any difficulty, look around for kiosks / booths staffed by volunteer Ambassadors - they can usually be spotted wearing "ten gallon" cowboy hats. They offer maps and terminal guides (which include dining and shopping information).

There is no need to leave the secure area to move from one concourse to another. *Exceptions are arriving international flights. In such case one must normally clear immigration and customs, reclaim bags and proceed through security.

Terminal Link's blue and greens vans arrive every 10 minutes and will transfer you between all terminals once outside of security.

Walking between terminals
- Terminals A-C and B-D (international) are connected at the ends by departures level walkways; the people mover belts on these walkways have been out of service at least for years. Estimate at least a five to ten minute walk between A and C, B and D, more if gates are farther from the connector.
- Terminals A and B are connected by overhead walkways (escalator or lift / elevator). This walkway is serviced by working people mover belts, all of which are out of service as of 7/18/19. Courtesy carts use this route by using lifts.
- Terminals C and D (international) are connected by overhead walkways (escalator or lift / elevator). This walkway is serviced by working people mover belts.

Q. If I am making an international to international connection, what is the process?
There is no international transit process in most U.S.A. airports, but (DFW and MIA have a ITI baggage exception for international to international if arriving from some "approved" international origins). Arriving internationally, unless you have been pre-cleared or are excused by meeting ITI requirements as described here, you must proceed through U. S. immigration (there are kiosks and a fast channel for Global Entry approved passengers, and a "green line" for those with no checked bags), recover your baggage from the baggage carousel and proceed through U. S. Customs. There is a "green line" shortcut for passengers traveling only with carry-on baggage (no checked luggage) and there are Global Entry kiosks and a short cut to Global Entry queues.
Upon exiting Customs there is a bag drop facility; drop your checked connecting baggage, exit to the landside arrivals area.
NOTE: if your connection exceeds 11 hours or entails remaining overnight, you will normally be required to take your baggage with you and re-check it within ~four hours of departure.
NOTE: Any liquids in excess of security allowance will have to either be packed in checked baggage or, in the case of duty free purchases at your origin (or in air from other airlines), presented in STEB (Secure, Tamper Evident Bags) with receipts to TSA
Proceed to the kiosks to get boarding passes for your ongoing travel, or check in and re-check your baggage, then proceed through TSA security to airside (see the "DFW Security" section). Your international departure will be from Terminal D, also your international arrival terminal.

Arriving Passengers: After collecting your baggage, follow the Rental Car signs to the designated pick-up area on the lower level of the terminal. From there, board the Rental Car shuttle bus. Buses run 24 hours a day, depart (theoretically) every five minutes and reach the Rental Car Center in approximately 10 minutes.

During Off Schedule Operations / Irregular Operations, cots with blankets and pillows are available for affected passengers.
During OSO / IROPS, AA will generally not offer hotel and meal vouchers for disruptions from causes not directly under the airline's control (such as weather). You may be able to at least get "distressed traveler" certificates for lower rates from AA, or you may be able to request distressed traveler rates from reservations center's or properties.

If your inbound arrives (not lands) on time yes you will make it. The Skytrain will take you quickly between terminals. But you don't have much room for errors.

Agree with EXP100, also FYI your gates will probably change 1000 times between now and your actual flight departures/arrivals.

Gates change frequently at DFW. 55 is close but should be sufficient if the flights are on-time.

BTW OP for future consideration taxis at DFW can be very long. DFW has a couple of runways that are miles away from the actual terminal. A 25 or even 30 minute taxi (mine yesterday was 26 minutes) is not uncommon. (Airport authorities build all these runways but then there're so far out). My rule of thumb at DFW is not less than 90 minutes.

I got very lucky a month or two ago. I had a scheduled arrival of 12:37 and departure of 1:08, so 31 minutes. (was very nervous booking it, but didn't have other options that day) They were both on RJ. The night before I checked and gate was scheduled to arrive in E and depart from B, so I knew my chances were slim. I packed everything in a duffle bag instead of my normal suitcase so I could squeeze it into the overhead and not have to wait for a gate check. Sometime the morning of the flight they switched the departure and actually ended up flying out on the same plane I landed on, so even had a chance to grab a sandwich to eat.

As stated above and by a few others here, if the weather is solid you should be fine. The nice thing about AA is their ETA's typically are gate ETA's or at least pretty close to gate ETA's in DFW. Where I've had my issues is having the gate occupied or worse, at the gate and the arrival agent is nowhere to be found.

Definitely worth asking the question, as you're connecting to the only flight of the day to OAX. But I would not be too worried. 54 minutes is a very comfortable transfer time at DFW. The main risk is a timely departure out of LGA. I suspect your plane will have arrived the night before and there are typically fewer problems first thing in the morning. Tomorrow morning the weather at LGA is predicted to be sunny. And the schedules are padded to account for delays.
Also A35 to D34 is a simple 5-10 minute walk across the bridge between the terminals. I would be happy with that connection. The only improvement would a transfer route that passed by one the the Admirals Clubs.

Don't want to beat a dead horse to death but the biggest issue at DFW can be a very long taxi into the gate and I'm finding the schedules don't have that much padding to allow for that. Yesterday as it's happened many times like this we land T-15 prior to arrival on that runway all the way well off Terminal D (granted that runway doesn't get used a lot). 30 minutes to taxi to C2. So we arrive 15 minutes late. I'm in 17F on a 321neo (no upgrade for me). No shortage of paxs with 45-50 minutes stuck back in coach upset on whether AA is going to hold the door on their connecting flight.

Is that a result of a schedule change? If so call AA now to get on an earlier flight as AA tends to be amendable (at least IME) on tight connections, particularly if there's as in this situation only one flight a day.

P.S. I have done a ~40 minute connection before at DFW. The flights were on time and there was no issue.

Forgot about those new low D gates. 3 minutes late-but then there's the time it takes the GA to connect the jetbridge and depending upon where you're seated and the a/c type it could be another 10-15 minutes before one actually is walking out of the jetbridge and into the terminal.
