General Information
Despite it's size and five terminals, DFW is a fairly easy airport to navigate and connect though. If you have any difficulty, look around for kiosks / booths staffed by volunteer Ambassadors - they can usually be spotted wearing "ten gallon" cowboy hats. They offer maps and terminal guides (which include dining and shopping information).

There is no need to leave the secure area to move from one concourse to another. *Exceptions are arriving international flights. In such case one must normally clear immigration and customs, reclaim bags and proceed through security.

Terminal Link's blue and greens vans arrive every 10 minutes and will transfer you between all terminals once outside of security.

Walking between terminals
- Terminals A-C and B-D (international) are connected at the ends by departures level walkways; the people mover belts on these walkways have been out of service at least for years. Estimate at least a five to ten minute walk between A and C, B and D, more if gates are farther from the connector.
- Terminals A and B are connected by overhead walkways (escalator or lift / elevator). This walkway is serviced by working people mover belts, all of which are out of service as of 7/18/19. Courtesy carts use this route by using lifts.
- Terminals C and D (international) are connected by overhead walkways (escalator or lift / elevator). This walkway is serviced by working people mover belts.

Q. If I am making an international to international connection, what is the process?
There is no international transit process in most U.S.A. airports, but (DFW and MIA have a ITI baggage exception for international to international if arriving from some "approved" international origins). Arriving internationally, unless you have been pre-cleared or are excused by meeting ITI requirements as described here, you must proceed through U. S. immigration (there are kiosks and a fast channel for Global Entry approved passengers, and a "green line" for those with no checked bags), recover your baggage from the baggage carousel and proceed through U. S. Customs. There is a "green line" shortcut for passengers traveling only with carry-on baggage (no checked luggage) and there are Global Entry kiosks and a short cut to Global Entry queues.
Upon exiting Customs there is a bag drop facility; drop your checked connecting baggage, exit to the landside arrivals area.
NOTE: if your connection exceeds 11 hours or entails remaining overnight, you will normally be required to take your baggage with you and re-check it within ~four hours of departure.
NOTE: Any liquids in excess of security allowance will have to either be packed in checked baggage or, in the case of duty free purchases at your origin (or in air from other airlines), presented in STEB (Secure, Tamper Evident Bags) with receipts to TSA
Proceed to the kiosks to get boarding passes for your ongoing travel, or check in and re-check your baggage, then proceed through TSA security to airside (see the "DFW Security" section). Your international departure will be from Terminal D, also your international arrival terminal.

Arriving Passengers: After collecting your baggage, follow the Rental Car signs to the designated pick-up area on the lower level of the terminal. From there, board the Rental Car shuttle bus. Buses run 24 hours a day, depart (theoretically) every five minutes and reach the Rental Car Center in approximately 10 minutes.

Dallas newbie questions
Just moved to Las Colinas this weekend. I took the DART train from LC convention center to DFW now and had a few questions.
1. I paid my 2 hour ticket for $2.50 and was on my way. There was no ticket collection and/or swipe upon boarding nor disembarking. Is DART train usage completely on the honor system?
My flight to SAT was leaving C21. The train stopped and I walked up the little hill to the bottom level of A12. I took the elevator up to departures. Unfortunately A12 isn't tsa pre check so I walked down to A21 and used it there. Then I got the airside train (like I normally would do when connecting through DFW) to C21. Seemed like a pain. Is there some more convenient step I am missing? I noticed outside there were signs for the train to ABCD...I thought the inter terminal train was only airside. Is there one landside too?

The route you took is likely best. The other choice (required for folks not flying AA and checking bags or otherwise needing to visit a non-AA ticket counter) is to take the same A12 elevator to the upper level, then walk outside and catch a Terminal Link shuttle van to the other terminal, then clear security there. The Terminal Link is likely what the sign to saw was pointing to.
Edit to add - instead pf a paper ticket, you should download the DART app and use that to buy your ticket. Advantage is you can do that in advance, then just activate it as you board. I've seen people walk up to the platform as the train pulls in, and still miss the train because of the time to buy the ticket at the kiosk. Having it pre-purchased via the app solves that.

Yes, very much an honor system. They do give out tickets, sometimes at odd times, like one time I saw a DFW employee get nailed at 6 a.m.
Back when UA refused to let me check in online I had the distinct displeasure of taking the outside route - trust me, airside is 10 times better and more comfortable as well as MUCH faster.
And honestly, most folks who post think the train is pretty easy, not a pain at all. Including me.

Well, they installed readers in buses and beside the ticket machines about a year ago, but AFAIK have not even announced what they are for.

45 min @ DFW?
Not familiar with DFW. Considering a flight that changes in DFW with only 45 min between flights. Flying fist class, would that be enough time to change terminals and would my luggage make it to the next flight? Other than that, it's a great schedule for me.

If it is an international to domestic then you will not make it due to customs/immigration and security
If it is DOM-DOM or DOM-INtl then you could make it as connecting via the skytrain can get you to the other terminals quickly. I think the MCT is 45mins for DOM to DOM but you are relying on nothing going wrong.
Is there a later flight from DFW to your destination if you miss it?
