General Information
Despite it's size and five terminals, DFW is a fairly easy airport to navigate and connect though. If you have any difficulty, look around for kiosks / booths staffed by volunteer Ambassadors - they can usually be spotted wearing "ten gallon" cowboy hats. They offer maps and terminal guides (which include dining and shopping information).

There is no need to leave the secure area to move from one concourse to another. *Exceptions are arriving international flights. In such case one must normally clear immigration and customs, reclaim bags and proceed through security.

Terminal Link's blue and greens vans arrive every 10 minutes and will transfer you between all terminals once outside of security.

Walking between terminals
- Terminals A-C and B-D (international) are connected at the ends by departures level walkways; the people mover belts on these walkways have been out of service at least for years. Estimate at least a five to ten minute walk between A and C, B and D, more if gates are farther from the connector.
- Terminals A and B are connected by overhead walkways (escalator or lift / elevator). This walkway is serviced by working people mover belts, all of which are out of service as of 7/18/19. Courtesy carts use this route by using lifts.
- Terminals C and D (international) are connected by overhead walkways (escalator or lift / elevator). This walkway is serviced by working people mover belts.

Q. If I am making an international to international connection, what is the process?
There is no international transit process in most U.S.A. airports, but (DFW and MIA have a ITI baggage exception for international to international if arriving from some "approved" international origins). Arriving internationally, unless you have been pre-cleared or are excused by meeting ITI requirements as described here, you must proceed through U. S. immigration (there are kiosks and a fast channel for Global Entry approved passengers, and a "green line" for those with no checked bags), recover your baggage from the baggage carousel and proceed through U. S. Customs. There is a "green line" shortcut for passengers traveling only with carry-on baggage (no checked luggage) and there are Global Entry kiosks and a short cut to Global Entry queues.
Upon exiting Customs there is a bag drop facility; drop your checked connecting baggage, exit to the landside arrivals area.
NOTE: if your connection exceeds 11 hours or entails remaining overnight, you will normally be required to take your baggage with you and re-check it within ~four hours of departure.
NOTE: Any liquids in excess of security allowance will have to either be packed in checked baggage or, in the case of duty free purchases at your origin (or in air from other airlines), presented in STEB (Secure, Tamper Evident Bags) with receipts to TSA
Proceed to the kiosks to get boarding passes for your ongoing travel, or check in and re-check your baggage, then proceed through TSA security to airside (see the "DFW Security" section). Your international departure will be from Terminal D, also your international arrival terminal.

Arriving Passengers: After collecting your baggage, follow the Rental Car signs to the designated pick-up area on the lower level of the terminal. From there, board the Rental Car shuttle bus. Buses run 24 hours a day, depart (theoretically) every five minutes and reach the Rental Car Center in approximately 10 minutes.

International surprises at DFW on AA
And to address the first surprise, in the US after exiting customs and immigration you are always entering an area outside security, and have to go through security again. That is not an issue that AA has any control over. It's just that way at all airports in the US.

At IAD pax using the mid-field immigrations area get released from Customs directly to a TSA checkpoint and into the domestic terminal. This is the only path to follow using the mid-field Immigrations facility. Other pax arrive landside like at other airports.

recently encountered two surprises flying from MEX to US West Coast via DFW
1) these is a terrifically-fast express lane at Customs for carryon-only baggage (green line) on far wall at Customs
SURPRISE! when you finish at the express lane and step through elevator/door ... you find yourself outside security at ticketing counter / checkpoint for D22. Long line to reenter the terminal
2) there are many flights to the West Coast so when your flight gets in early, you have options for an earlier flight
SURPRISE! the DFW ticketing agent explained that since the ticket originated outside of the US, AA forbids the agents (and punishes the agents) for moving to an earlier flight. and the check-in kiosk (you're outside security ... See #1 above) also denies any other flight options.
Thinking that both of these can be fixed ... anyone at AA listening?

On #2, this seems like a case where it's technically against the rules but (evidenced by the replies here), most agents will allow it anyway. If the agent at the ticket counter doesn't cooperate, I'd suggest you just head to the gate of the earlier desired flight and ask the gate agent there.

Also, ORD customs dumps you out to the street as well. Having customs exit into the main concourse is a tradeoff- do you slightly inconvenience onward passengers by making them walk to the main checkpoint, or greatly inconvenience terminating passengers by making them re-clear security just so they can exit the terminal?

The first security lane you came to was the post-customs security lane. That's why it was so crowded. I always go to the next one anyways because it has Precheck and the one right at customs doesn't.

I am looking at something similar though I am curious if a 2 hour 20 minute connection is too short (arrive on Emirates @ 9:45am, depart on AA to LAS). No global entry and definitely checked bags.

DFW - Going from Terminal C to A
I haven't been to DFW in a long time.
I'm arriving at C14 with a departure at A23.
Approximate time to go between the two? Is it walkable or do I need to take the train?

There is significant terminal construction taking place in DFW.
I would recommend the train only because all hallways and gates are not currently open.

Each terminal in DFW is approximately 3000 feet to walk all the way around. Plus about 800 feet for the walkways between terminals. You're not going quite a whole terminal (by 9 gates, or a quarter of a terminal). So if it's about 3000 feet, and you walk at 264 feet/minute (3 miles an hour), it'll take you 11.36 minutes.
Skylink won't be much shorter, if any. You have to walk from C14 to C12, take it one stop, then walk from A29 to A23.

45 Minute C to D at DFW Connection...
Hey Everybody, being in DTW I fly DL almost exclusively. Because of our destination, had to fly AA. We have a 45 minute connection from C7 to D40 (incoming from Detroit, going to PVR). Should we hoof it or take the train? Are we going to make it?
