Just some SWAGs, then:

If one assumes 55,000 EXPs...

and 4 times that many Plats...

and 10 times that many Golds...

...then the total number would be 825,000 elites.

I'd tend to think that the ratio of EP : PLT is higher-- I'd speculate closer to 8:1 or even higher. PURE GUESS on my part on this aspect though.

Is that 8100 miles x 2 ways x 2 EQMs per mile flown?

I value your guess more than mine, though.

SWAG II:

If one assumes 55,000 EXPs...

and 8 times that many Plats...

and 20 times that many Golds...

...then the total number would be 1,595,000 elites.

Since 1 RT to HKG (say, VFR) from NYC (I'll use LGA-DFW-HKG as my routing), which is exactly 19000 AA miles RT, plus 1 JFK-LAX RT nonstop (4950 RT, could also easily be VFR) puts a flyer at 23950 miles, only takes one short trip after that to hit Gold. So, visit two sets of relatives (one relatively far), one Caribbean vacation, a person would get Gold just that easily without really going too far out of their way. Taking just the one LGA-DFW-HKG RT in a year in a premium class gets Gold all by itself, which is probably not unreasonable for the more well heeled VFR traveler.

What's the right number?

Depending on what status level you have, some people say that there are too many EX Plat's. Does anyone know what percentage of AA advantage people are: EX Plat. Plat. Gold?

Do airlines "artificially" have level limits?

Theoretically, if all travelers achieved 100K, then they'd be EX Plat.

Does anyone have an answer to this?

As this question does come up every now and then, there's an extant thread discussing this topic post-merge. I'll bring this post into it. Please know that, despite your original thread title being "clever" and making people think to click, thread titles must be descriptive of the thread's contents. Clickbait-type titles aren't permitted.

I'll also remind members that meta discussion is inherently off topic and will be removed. Unwelcoming and rude content will also be removed, and repeatedly posting in such a way will result in disciplinary action.
