Base Fare Change on AA International Award Tix after schedule change
I have recently redeemed miles for an AA international award tix to HKG in October. All flights are operated by AA. The base fare of the original tix is $0, and the taxes and fees are about $44.
A few days later, I have to change the return to a different date. The new flight schedule has the same routing as the original one, and all flights are still operated by AA. Since it is an international flight, I have to call the reservation desk to make the change. However, the base fare of the new tix will now be $6. This has triggered a lot of extra tax and fees, and now the total taxes and fees would be $99. The agent has no clue why it is happening, and she even called the ticketing office and they say that the taxes and fees should not be going up based on this change. However, the computer keeps showing her the new number, and I ended up not to make the changes yet. Anyone experience this before? If so, is there any suggestions how to resolve that? Thanks |

The agent seemed confused by it and put me on hold while she talked to someone in the tariffs department. After a couple minutes she came back and said there is a new fee (she said it’s called Q580) for transiting Hong Kong and that everything is applied correctly. She did agree with me on the fact that since it is applied as a fare it’s triggering additional fees – $35 in U.S. taxes and $16.50 in Passenger Facility Charge or XF fees. So this $12 per person is costing our family $254. Is that the end of the world, for what we’re getting? Of course not. But do I want to give away $250 for nothing? Um, no thanks! |
Thanks guys! Although the situation is not completely the same (e.g. I am flying on AA only), I guess that AA has made some fees as base fare when it is quoted through agent.
As I get a much lower taxes and fees when I booked this award online (e.g. zero base fare), I guess I am not going to change the date to trigger the much higher taxes and fees... :) |
Since AA awards are charged as one way awards, this is a time where having booked it as 2x one ways rather than a roundtrip would have been of benefit
If it had been 2 x oneways, there would be no change to the outward journey and so the additional outbound taxes would not have been triggered |
Yes. I agree. I didn't know that the taxes and fees pricing of this award ticket are different between online and reservation system used by agent, so I have booked it as round trip for convenience.
However, it would not make a difference at the end since I want to change the inbound flight schedule instead, and this triggers the extra taxes and fees. |
