Cancelling and rebooking a held award flight?

I currently have a held award flight that has its 5 day expiration tomorrow (4/25). I am awaiting vacation approval from work, and unfortunately they haven't gottem back yet. It is a flight to Hawaii (75k for two tix). Currently on the dates I have booked it appears as if there is one more award ticket. If I try to book another, I get the low rate for one, but if I try two the one was price jumps from 17.5k miles to 40k miles. If I cancel the held reservation, are those two seats immediately put back into inventory and I can then go right back in and hold two seats again?

There is no guarantee that cancelled reward seats will return to reward inventory. If it is important to you, book the seats and risk the redeposit fees.

I'm sure Jerry is right, there is no guarantee that your released reward seats will return to the inventory. I can say though that I have done this several times and I have seen the released seats show up within a minute or two. And in a few cases they were snatched up far more quickly than I would have imagined! If you take the chance and let them go, be quick about grabbing them again.

I think I am going book it and risk the fees, or more likely change the dates until I find one that works for me if it doesn't go through
