Upgrading with Miles SFO to JFK

I am pretty new to AA, and only have a small number of miles. I was looking to upgrade on a flight from SFO to JFK. Are all the direct flights on this route 3 class? I can see some have C listed but 0 seats available, some only have A listed with available seats. However, on these flights to upgrade from economy you need C inventory, correct?

Yes. Usually C opens up on the day of the flight. You can wait-list for an upgrade.

A is a discount First (not Business) fare.

A is also upgrade inventory for SWU or miles from Y>F on domestic routes where only two classes are offered :) Paid discounted F is usually sold out of P (but sometimes books into A as an "instant upgrade")
