Upgrade request for gold
 

Hi, this is my first time as a gold.
Trying to upgrade and the reservation webpage in aa.com says "requested"
It is already inside 24 hours before departure.
How will I know if I am approved for upgrade?

As a gold, you probably won't know until you get to the gate. It is possible though that you could get upgraded before then. Keep an eye on your email or AA app on your phone. The phone app will show the upgrade list, and you can see where you place on it. At the gate there is usually a screen that shows the upgrade list as well.
You can also ask the gate agent what your chances look like.

Don't get your hopes up, but it's not entirely hopeless.

So are you flying tomorrow (2/2/2015) which is within 24 hours, or 2/6/2015 - on that one the EXP upgrade window just opened.... In either event, you could upgrade miles + copay right now - although I understand you want to use the 5(?) stickers.

Sorry to bum you you out, but even 23 years ago when I was AA Gold for the first time I'm not sure it ever got me a comp cabin upgrade. Did get me on a few oversold flights, and might just do the same for you.

Fast forward to tomorrow and there are magnitudes more golds, not to mention plats and up in front of you, but far fewer relative upgrade seats to be had. I really do hope it works for you all the time and I love your enthusiasm, but you haven't arrived at Upgradeville yet. Maybe a better location in coach on a good day, or then maybe I'm just bitter since my negotiated-fare company booking bucket seldom counts as a segment for status and I'm back to AA peasant.

Are Golds and Platinums still getting upgrades? As an EXP - soon to be lowly Platinum - my experience is that even EXP are lucky to be upgraded any more. These days, if I truly want or need first, I just buy first.

It's certainly route- and date-dependent, but the vast majority of my upgrades still clear as an EXP.

So far this year as an EXP I am 100% on Upgrades with AA (and US). I have flown 28 segments in Jan including ATL-DFW, ATL-ORD, ORD-LAX, ORD-SAN, DFW-LAX, DFW-SAN, LAX-IAH, LAX-DEN, DEN-DFW, ORD-ATL, DFW-ATL, MIA-ATL, MIA-LAX, LAX-MIA, ORD-JFK, PHX-ORD, DFW-PHX, ATL-MIA, IAH-DFW, LAX-LIH, KOA-LAX, OGG-LAX, LAX-HNL, and SLC-PHX (US), PHX-SBP (US) and while some were at the airport or within 24 hrs all have cleared!

If the OP is flying tomorrow (Sunday, Feb 2), then the odds that their Gold upgrade request actually clears are VERY low.

But as posted earlier, there is one upgrade seat available right now for miles and co-pay upgrade.

I have decent luck as a gold, but never tried out of LAX.. been years since I've been there. However, the way it works for me is that you request it in advance, and you get notified 1 of 2 ways: 1) email in advance, if the upgrade clears far in advance (which for me, many do out of OKC. 2) you'll go to check in, be told that it can't clear and you are moved to the waitlist, and then at the gate you'll have to watch.

I gifted gold status to some family members, and yes, they do get upgraded sometimes.
