Welcome to the "2015 Guide to, and listing of, compensation" thread!
In keeping with tradition, we'd like to ask members to report their compensation in the following format:
- Date
- AAdvantage Status
- Fare class
- What happened
- Compensation
- Comments
• JGR01 has created a spreadsheet parsing posts in this thread from 2003-2007, available for download here
• AA's official policy regarding compensation for delays, cancellations, and diversions is as follows (thanks to tom911 for posting):
DELAYS, CANCELLATIONS AND DIVERSIONS
American Airlines will provide customers at the airport and onboard an affected aircraft with timely and frequent updates regarding known delays, cancellations and diversions and will strive to provide the best available information concerning the duration of delays and to the extent available, the flight's anticipated departure time.
We are not responsible for any special, incidental or consequential damages if we do not meet this commitment.
When cancellations and major delays are experienced, you will be rerouted on our next flight with available seats. If the delay or cancellation was caused by events within our control and we do not get you to your final destination on the expected arrival day, we will provide reasonable overnight accommodations, subject to availability.
In extreme circumstances, it is possible that a flight will cancel while on the ground in the city to which it was diverted. When this happens you will be rerouted on the next American flight with available seats, or in some circumstances on another airline or some other alternative means of transportation. If we are unable to reroute you, reasonable overnight accommodations will be provided by American, subject to availability.
American will provide amenities for delayed passengers, necessary to maintain the safety and/or welfare of certain passengers such as customers with disabilities, unaccompanied children, the elderly or others to whom such amenities will be furnished consistent with special needs and/or circumstances.

Contrary to the belief of some, airlines are not required to compensate passengers for “damages” when flights are delayed or canceled. Compensation is required by law only when you are “bumped” from a flight that is oversold. Airlines almost always refuse to pay passengers for financial losses resulting from a delayed flight. If the purpose of your trip is to close a potentially lucrative business deal, to give a speech or lecture, to attend a family function, or to be present at any time-sensitive event, you might want to allow a little extra time and take an earlier flight. In other words, airline delays and cancellations are not unusual, and defensive planning is a good idea when time is your most important consideration.

The mainline flight from CLT to the Northeast was not canceled.
The puddle-jumper flight to CLT was cancelled. AA could have easily squeezed in another jump from and to CLT (and yes I know it's an express carrier that would do it).
Low demand on my flight plus a delayed plane = my flight got cancelled and me inconvenienced.

It's one of those where it's easy to feel like, "if they REALLY wanted to get me there, they could have."
In that scenario you can simply ask for a refund. And take a different flight. Happened to me where segment 1 was diverted, causing the connections to become impossible. Refunded.
Booked new (totally new destination due to the timing and other factors), but the point was the original was refunded.

To ask more specifically:
Would a $150 travel voucher towards a future AA flight, as a goodwill gesture, be appropriate? (That's about 1/2 the cost of the original ticket.)
I am missing an important appointment tomorrow, getting in a day later and arriving at a different airport.
I would prefer to get a refund and just take Delta or something back but of course I need a few miles to requalify for status, generated from these flights.

Again, you're being very vague, so we wouldn't be able to tell you anything. Where was the flight from and to? I can say that i guarantee you that you'll get 2x your money back because of some regulation, but there's no details to work with. And missing an important appointment doesn't mean jack, they can't just pull planes out of thin air.

Severe weather in Texas and across the southeast today is a the likely cause of the cancellation. No comp for WX

The flight that was first delayed (it seems) was 4867, TRI-CLT. Flights after that one--which seemed to be the plane that was to operate my flight--were all an hour late.
Thanks for the help, everyone.
I did book my flight today so that I could make one appointment tomorrow morning, and I am now missing that appointment due to AA. I don't want to treat this as a "trip in vain" even if it would apply here, though, since I don't want to take advantage of the situation; I just want some type of compensation for the inconvenience.

Does AA ever give elite-qualifying miles as compensation for extended travel delays?
I am guessing that I'll be given regular miles, but since I almost never book award tickets, that does me no good. A few thousand elite-qualifying miles would be tremendous, though.

Never heard of them giving EQM for delays. Doubt they would.

NOTE: This is the American Airlines | AAdvantage forum.
Questions and discussions about compensation for Southwest have moved to their own thread in a thread titled "Arrived late, put on other flight - original left late. Compensation?".
