AA Ends International Award Free N. America Gateway Stopover
As of April 8, 2014 - no prior notice given.

● As of 8 April 2014, AA North America to international destination awards no longer offer a voluntary stopover at the N. A. international gateway.

● Stopovers are defined as more than 4 hours for itineraries using an award within/between the U.S./Canada/PR/USVI and more than 24 hours for itineraries using a Mexico, Caribbean or other international award as of 8 Jan 2014. (JonNYC).

● Awards ticketed prior to April 8 can add or change a stopover. Refer the AAgent to the "All Partner Award Guidelines" document which can be found on jetnet at Webref-> jetnet-> aawrcontent-> res-> resstaff-> internal-> AADAP. Giving this to the agent should be enough to find it. This is from the version dated 7/22/2014 with credit to JonNYC:

Tickets issued prior to April 8, 2014, free international stopovers on international awards are allowed at the North American gateway.

●For stopover purposes only, the North American gateway is defined as the passenger's first point of arrival or last point of departure in the U.S./Canada/PR/USVI/Mexico

●Stopovers within/between all other regions require additional awards
●Changes or adding a stopover to this ticket will require a call to Tariff for PQR prior to setting up reissue
This thread is for discussion of the now eliminated international north american gateway stopover on awards.

So we know they've eliminated the SO at the NA gateway. But did AA not replace it with anything else?

Did AA actually go from being one of the most liberal, i.e. allowing SOs on OWs, to being the only airline of which I'm aware that does not offer stopovers AT ALL?

You were the first person to PM me a while ago and mention that people were starting to get told "N.America gateway stop-over no more"-- I shoulda' listened!

That said, no, no "replacement" from anything I've seen-- you now, in essence "pay for what you fly"

Eh, you shoulda listened, but at the same time, I was hoping I was wrong

Wow. Can't believe they don't allow a single stopover, even on RTs.

Wow. That was a very useful benefit for award flight. Along with the changes in the Choice fares and other "enhancements," AA is dropping the ball in communicating these changes to its customers, at least to the elites who know them very well.

First they took away stopovers on round trips, now they take it away on one-ways as well. Sigh.

Technically they took away the stopovers on the one way zone based awards a couple hours before they took away the roundtrip explorer awards that allowed for multiple stopovers, but it's easy to understand why customers are confused since AA still has not officially announced or communicated either change.

FYI. I have an award xxx-HKG-JFK (stopover) -xxx ticketed prior to April 8. Today I was able to change date on the JFK-xxx leg w/o taking away the stopover. However, the agent was very specific that I couldn't change airport from JFK to LGA. I mentioned that previously JFK / LGA / EWR were considered the same. She said "not anymore, you'll have to pay a change fee". I hope this is just a fluke and not another 'enhancement'.

Thumbs down AA has no respect for its best customers

Cancelling the NA gateway stop-overs in international awards is a Big reduction in the AA awards value.
Doing so WITHOUT an advanced formal notice is a signal that AA is becoming a company with NO respect for its best customers.

Maybe time to do more of my paid flights with United.

Does anybody know if United still enables 1 NA gateway stop-over for an international round trip award ??

At the rate devaluations are happening, you might be back before you realize. It's like a rat race to the bottom.

Yes, and the stopover doesn't even need to be in NA. I got 2 with a stop in Europe no long ago.

Me too, and I -did- try and investigate but wow was this set of changes kept under tight wraps. Even the person who told me of "several changes for April 1st" (turned out to be wrong on the date) never hinted that it was a troika of major changes of this magnitude.

I wonder what the next changes will be? Remember, the US and AA programs have yet to be combined, so there is a lot of room for creativity in devaluations and benefit losses.

Where are the rules printed? Perhaps "stopover" is defined?
