The Passenger should be advised

BA will pre-seat the customer subject to availability & seat requests
are never guaranteed and always subject to operational needs

Subsequent seat change

Should an aircraft or configuration change generate an automated
operational seat change that separates the party, the request seat
process must be initiated again. The travel agent would need to
remove and re-enter the TOGT keyword.
Also from the BA website:

Members of the Executive Club and other oneworld frequent flyers are able to
reserve seats at different stages, depending on their tier.

Tier Seat selection

Gold/oneworld Emerald Free seat selection from the time of booking
for everyone in your booking and friends and family on other bookings,
who are travelling with you in the same travel class and on the same flight*.

Silver/oneworld Sapphire Free seat selection from the time of booking
for everyone in your booking*.

Bronze/oneworld Ruby Free seat selection from seven days before
departurefor everyone in your booking*.

*You must be travelling on the booking (or in the case of Gold Members,
one of the bookings) for these benefits to apply. They apply to British
Airways flights only and are not available on Basic (HBO / hand baggage only)
fares or group rate bookings. Exit row seats are not available to Silver or
Bronze Members on long haul flights until 24 hours before departure.
On some occasions, exit rows seats on short haul flights may not be
available in advance due to operational reasons.
Selecting seats can be done via the BA "Manage My Booking" tool (link) which may recognize your AA PNR (you will need your PNR and last name to log on to MMB). If not, you can get your BA PNR by calling AA, or you can go to the Qantas website, enter your AA PNR and you will be presented with your BA PNR.

I did that. He repeated his belief it would only work on flexible wtp or on aa. And yes the aa number is in the reservation. Even tried removing it and readding it. The only thing i can think about ia that this is an aa ticket. I give up. No time to queue on the phone just to select a seat.

I'm a Oneworld Ruby via AA. I'm booked on BA EWR-LHR in WT+ in about a week and a half, directly booked on BA.com with my AA FF# in the booking. Seat selection should open up for me this weekend, but currently the message on the BA site says I can select a seat 24 hours before departure. Does this indicate that I'm going to have the same issue that others have reported? I haven't seen any reports from Rubys, only from those with higher status levels that should have had seat selection from time of booking.

I've tried adding removing and adding my AA FF# via Royal Jordanian's site, but it hasn't made a difference.

Thanks!

A follow up on my own post in case others have this issue. The message on BA's site/app never changed from "you can pick your seats 24 hours before your flight" but a week out I was able to select seats for free. In addition, more seats opened up for selection a week out than were available had I paid in advance. I was able to get a window/aisle pair in the center of the WT+ section but had I paid my choices were aisle/middle or last row at the bathrooms.

Thanks for the tip on using finnair. I got into the trap of BA not recognizing the OWE. I removed the AA using finnair and added it back. BA became happy and allowed me to chose seats

Have a AA/BA itinerary in December where BA is recognizing my status for one of the BA legs but not the other BA leg. I don't know whose IT is worse. AA's or BA's.

What are the practical consequences of this?
You can't select seats?

It wants me to pay to select seats. Not really worried as it's a two hour CE flight. But it's annoying.

That is odd. So on the BA longhaul you can select seats and on the BA short haul you can't?
I assume you are NOT AA GLD, because AA GLD can only pick seats within 7 days.
Have you tried calling BA for the seat selection? I don't see why they would not be able to help.

I'm AA Platinum. I'm on AA for the longhaul both ways, and BA for the short haul both ways. It let me select for free in one direction but wanted me to pay in the other. It's fixed now using the Finnair trick.

I think it's related to how screwed up the reservation has gotten with BA schedule changes. The last one I literally got a message that said the computer can't figure out what it's done, you'll have to call in to fix it, and it took 5 people working on it to sort it out, so they probably had to do some finagling to get it to work which is how my status probably dropped off on that leg only.
