Also from the BA website:
Selecting seats can be done via the BA "Manage My Booking" tool (link) which may recognize your AA PNR (you will need your PNR and last name to log on to MMB). If not, you can get your BA PNR by calling AA, or you can go to the Qantas website, enter your AA PNR and you will be presented with your BA PNR.

I did that. He repeated his belief it would only work on flexible wtp or on aa. And yes the aa number is in the reservation. Even tried removing it and readding it. The only thing i can think about ia that this is an aa ticket. I give up. No time to queue on the phone just to select a seat.

I'm a Oneworld Ruby via AA. I'm booked on BA EWR-LHR in WT+ in about a week and a half, directly booked on BA.com with my AA FF# in the booking. Seat selection should open up for me this weekend, but currently the message on the BA site says I can select a seat 24 hours before departure. Does this indicate that I'm going to have the same issue that others have reported? I haven't seen any reports from Rubys, only from those with higher status levels that should have had seat selection from time of booking.
I've tried adding removing and adding my AA FF# via Royal Jordanian's site, but it hasn't made a difference.
Thanks!

I assume you are NOT AA GLD, because AA GLD can only pick seats within 7 days.
Have you tried calling BA for the seat selection? I don't see why they would not be able to help.

I think it's related to how screwed up the reservation has gotten with BA schedule changes. The last one I literally got a message that said the computer can't figure out what it's done, you'll have to call in to fix it, and it took 5 people working on it to sort it out, so they probably had to do some finagling to get it to work which is how my status probably dropped off on that leg only.
